There is a very specific type of disappointment that you only get with big budget summer movies. It’s not crushing or anything, it barely even registers as disappointment. It’s just this vague, unsatisfying feeling that the thing you were hoping for is gone, and that in its place something simply exists. Not only do you not get what you wanted, but you are overcome with the realization that the thing you did get is just going to be around, showing on HBO2 at three in the morning for the rest of your life. You’ll probably watch it again, too, parts of it at least, drunkenly, with a bowl of poorly cooked Trader Joe’s pot stickers to sop up the booze. This doesn’t happen with Oscar Bait and it doesn’t happen with surprise indie hits and it doesn’t happen with similarly bad or underwhelming movies that you had no particular hopes for in the first place (I am thinking in particular of the new Real Steel trailer that showed before X-Men: First Class. Holy moly. That movie never looked very good, but now it looks very bad. Here’s a question: why is Hugh Jackman so reluctant to teach a fucking robot how to box? Just teach the robot, Hugh Jackman. “I can’t!” Yes you can. What is even going on here? Anyway.) It’s not that X-Men: First Class was “bad” exactly. But it wasn’t great. And it certainly didn’t live up to its exciting potential. Superheroes! Origin stories! Mad Men! Nope.

Guys, I just tried to create a Videogum Facebook Group on the Videogum Facebook Page for the Videogum Movie Club but it didn’t work because I guess only “people” can create Groups, not “fictional entities”? Pretty sad story. Now what are we going to do? Just kidding. What we are going to do is all go see X-Men: First Class this weekend and then talk about it Monday. See you then.

So, wait a second, the new X-Men is basically Mad Men but with more magic? YES, PLEASE! Also: Jennifer Lawrence? Stop robbing my dreams, Hollywood. I mean, you’re welcome to take whatever is there, mostly unrealistic IM chats that would never happen and concerns about being late to a generic airport, but please give me a percentage. At the very least, give me an Executive Producer credit. The point is: put this in my belly. (The cool thing about making references to the Fat Bastard character from the Austin Powers movies is that it ALWAYS works and it’s ALWAYS relevant. 2011!!!)

January Jones Looks Great! (How We Sexism Now)

The first images of January Jones as Emma Frost on the set of Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class have leaked, and she looks great! Seriously. She looks amazing. I want to go to the zoo with her. We wouldn’t have any children with us, and people would be like, uh, you guys, the zoo is kind of for families, and you both look really intense, and I would be like, “get lost,” and they would be shocked. Then we would sit on a bench outside of the lizard house eating sandwiches wrapped in wax paper. I want to travel on an airplane with her. As we boarded, people would look at us and think that we were awfully dressed up for a 2 hour airplane ride to Chicago, and I would look right back at them and respond out loud, as if I could read their minds, “have some self respect.” I want to sit in the waiting room while she visits the doctor. My point is, she looks great.

Of course, the funny thing is, every other time we have talked about someone dressed in their costume on the set of a Hollywood movie, it has not been as flattering. For example, Mr. Wizard over here, and also Sean Penn Nazi Hunter. Is it sexism? MAYBE. It turns out beautiful women can wear WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANT and still be VERY ATTRACTIVE. That being said, the counter-argument is that Nicolas Cage can wear whatever the fuck he wants, and he will still look like a transexual wizard with a serious Oxycontin addiction. So. Even Stephanies.

EXCLUSIVE: First Look At Josh Schwartz’s Script For X-Men: First Class

Interesting news about the next X-Men movie, you guys. From Variety:

Twentieth Century Fox is gearing up to continue its “X-Men” franchise with a younger set of mutants.

Studio has tapped “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz to write “X-Men: First Class.”

Schwartz, the creator and exec producer of CW’s teen sudser hit as well as Fox’s youth-centric “The OC” and NBC’s “Chuck,” is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series, which has earned $1.2 billion worldwide.

Weird. I will admit that at no point during the first three movies did I think “You know what this needs? A tween sensibility.” But that is why they gave the studio head job to Dana Gordon and not to me. (Yet!)

Anyway, the new movie definitely isn’t going to be your dad’s X-Men. An exclusive look at Schwartz’s script after the jump:
