The 10 Best TV Opening Title Sequences

Game of Thrones was nominated for thirteen Emmy nominations this year, and over the weekend it received an early Creative Arts Emmy for its opening title sequence. Great job! Although I have not watched the show, I hear people poke each other’s eyes in it?, I have watched the opening title sequence and it is very good. Opening title sequences are one of my favorite parts of TV shows because they look good, they usually have catchy songs, and don’t even get me started on the names, so I thought it would be COOL and FUN to talk about some of the best opening title sequences! My favorites tend to err on the side of stupid/embarrassing, so it would be helpful if anyone would point out any non-stupid/embarrassing opening titles I’m missing. Like, maybe The Wire has a good opening title sequence? I have honestly no idea. I have no idea if they even HAVE an opening credit sequence. Maybe it’s just a guy shouting “THE WIIIIIIREEEEEEEE” and then the show starts. Could be! Who knows. But here is the Game of Thrones title sequence, followed by my top ten:

Huh. She was one of the kids at the swimming pool when AJ and his stupid friends vandalized the high school. Between this and Boiling Points, if the music thing never worked out she could have always fallen back on playing unmemorable obnoxious people.

After I saw Where the Wild Things Are, I told a friend that a mash-up with Tony’s dialog from The Sopranos would be funny but that I didn’t need to bother making it because the Internet would make it for me. Took longer than I would’ve thought, but does Daddy know his Internet? (WOW! YUCK!)

The Hollywood Reporter has some interesting roundtable discussions with the Emmy-nominated showrunners Matthew Weiner (Mad Men), Shonda Rimes (Grey’s Anatomy), Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks And Recreation), Alan Ball (True Blood) and Katie Jacobs (House, M.D.), and Jenji Kohan (Weeds) including this one, where the producers share how they really feel about anyone who dares to spoil any part of their shows. They start out talking about the network promo departments and then get into fans on the internet, and their hostility shows, so it’s kind of funny. Unannounced spoilers ARE bad, but remember guys, WE MADE YOU.

Double Dog: I Took A TV Bus Tour Alone In A “Just Jack” Tshirt

The Challenge: I had to go on a 3.5 hour bus tour of totally random TV and film locations in New York City. Alone, and wearing a specific ridiculous tshirt. And I had to find someone to take my picture at every location.

The Result: I learned lessons about myself and others. And I went full retard.

Either way, this McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish commercial is on all the time this week! Every show. This is the “I want my baby back baby back baby back” of March 2009. The “five dollar footlongs,” if you will:

This doesn’t make me want a filet-o-fish (gross.) This just makes me miss The Sopranos.

Taxslayer.com Combines Tax Preparation And Offensive Cultural Stereotypes

The tax prep company Taxslayer.com has begun running commercials on national and local TV in time for W2 season. Like this one, which appears to take place in Tony’s urine-soaked safe house from the end of The Sopranos. Do the mafia even pay taxes? A version of this is actually running on TV right now:

Sopranos Wine Will Combine The Two Best Things In The World

One of the great lines in Forgetting Sarah Marshall was when Jason Segel was talking on the beach with Kemo and he asked how Kemo knew he’d been dumped by Sarah Marshall and Kemo said:

“I heard about it from everybody. You gotta stop talking about it. It’s like “the Sopranos.” It’s OVER. Find a new show.”

It’s funny because you think he’s going to say something about snitching, and then he points out the very true thing about how none of us are over that show. Best! ANYway, HBO has made a deal with an Italian wine distributor to make Sopranos-brand wine, which is not lame and too late, it’s awesome like a finely-aged wine. This is what I want to do to that wine:

So this was on during some sort of sports game on ESPN last night, and though it’s not the craziest local car dealership commercial by any means, somehow it manages to make you think of Entourage and The Sopranos at the same time. I can’t tell if they’re trying to be funny or not, but it definitely makes you stop flipping past ESPN and pay attention:

This parody video of the Joker having a sit down with Tony Soprano and Silvio Dante is overly long and seriously, you guys, more Joker impersonations? Joker tries to rent an apartment! Joker’s soup is too hot! That being said, it’s worth a look because the guy’s Tony Soprano impersonation is great, and that has to count for something in these dark times.
