This is the first poster for the Gossip Girl spin-off, Valley Girls, about a young Lily Van Der Woodsen in 1980s LA. Whoops, that’s your poster. They’ve made a terrible mistake. I mean, we’ve all known about this show for awhile now, and it always sounded kind of terrible, but there’s something particularly painful in seeing just exactly how unimaginative they’ve decided to be with it. Don’t get me wrong, it would be virtually impossible for the CW to make an imaginative show about Lily Van Der Woodsen’s youth gone wild days in 1980s LA short of having her ride around on Falkor fighting the Big Nothing. But this? With her clownishly obvious outfit (no Bravo) and it being a mugshot to let you know she’s wild? Boo, Josh Schwartz. You have been so busy phoning it in for your webshow that you’re barely even faxing it in for this. (Faxing joke! That ’80s Blog!)

OXOX, you know you hate this.

It’s being reported this morning that the CW will move forward with a Gossip Girl spin-off show. From E!:

The new venture from GG creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage is not, however, going to be a by-the-book look at Taylor Momsen’s character, Jenny Humphrey, but rather an original story about Lily van der Woodsen’s surely scandalous teen years growing up in the 1980s.

Surely Lily Van Der Woodsen’s teen years were scandalous. Surely. Surely scandalous. Writing!

I feel like Gossip Girl is at the precipice of an enormous crossroads right now, because its increasingly outlandish plotlines and always-tenuous grasp on reality is pushing it further and further into fourth season The O.C. “wait, is Ryan fucking CAGEFIGHTING?” territory. The last thing this show needs is a concurrent alternate set of subplots to get things twisted, not to mention the fact that a show set in 1980s LA is basically a period piece at this point. A period piece with a BAD track record:

Today on Vulture, Will Leitch handicaps the odds of each major Office character getting a spinoff in time for the Super Bowl next year, and they would all make great shows, but I have an indecent proposal: Nick D’Agosto, aka Jan’s ex assistant, Hunter! Hunter hasn’t been seen since last year, but in this season’s dark back-from-strike premiere, “The Dinner Party,” Jan revealed that Ryan fired Hunter shortly after she left Dunder Mifflin. Hunter then released a CD with his band “The Hunted,” and a single called “That One Night” that implies that Jan “made him a man.” So, the show could follow Hunter and his band as they go on tour, and Jan could make guest appearances as his secret lover. Just look at him, he’s dreamy, it could work! Sure, he’s on Heroes too, but this kid is not famous enough.
