Listen, I get it. There are some days when you wake up and you realize that, for longer than you’d like to admit, you’ve just been coasting on how cool you are. Sure, you’re very cool — your hair’s cool, your stuff’s cool, your friends’re cool, you got a cool ‘tude — but could you be cooler? Yes. If you could just push yourself a little bit, you know that you could certainly be cooler. Why settle? Do you think Bucky Lasek settled for just being the best skateboarder on Earth? No! He also became the best character to play in “Tony Hawk Pro Skater.” And that’s exactly what you’re like. So naturally, even though you were ALREADY skateboarding down a line of fire, what might be the pinnacle of cool to some, you had to kick it up a notch. It’s just who you are, man! Always pushing it a little further, catching people off guard. You can’t help it. You didn’t ask to be the coolest dude in town, but you gotta be who you are.

There’s a news story going around today about howteenage girls are sending naked pictures of themselves around as a way of telling boys they like them, only to have those pictures shared like some kind of viral text. Ugh. Poor teenage girls. When will they learn that they don’t have to do ANYTHING to tell boys they like them. Teenage girls could wear fart-scented perfume and dress like Cheech and Chong’s couch (what?) and still end up at Planned Parenthood twice a month.

Is it just me, or does the prospect of having kids keep getting grimmer and grimmer? Maybe we should just Children of Men ourselves and be done with it, because this shit is getting embarrassing. Remember the good old days? When a parent’s worst nightmare was just that their daughter would end up in the Skate Witches?

Then again, I got a text message from a friend yesterday saying that she saw a 40-year-old man skateboarding down her street while eating a pizza. So skateboarding is like life, you get a little bit of good with a LOT of bad.

And to those of you who say “this video is old, I deFriendstered this video on my old laptop that doesn’t even work anymore while listening to my Walkman that’s how old,” I say the emails to tips@videogum.com don’t write themselves. Sharing is caring.

As any self-respecting child growing up in the ’80s did, I saved up my money and bought a Powell Peralta Tony Hawk board with side rails and immediately stowed it away in the garage with virtually no scratches on it. But even if most of my childhood was dedicated to buying equipment I would never use and then reading Groo The Wanderer comics in my room, I still like skate videos. Let’s face it, they’re really fucking cool. Skaters have that Owen Wilson nonchalance about them (nullus on this whole post, obviously) that at least myself, as a Jew, find endlessly fascinating and enviable. They’re also total fucking assholes.

Zoo York has a new YouTube contest for who can make the viralist video that shows how they are the best at skateboarding and the worst at not being an asshole. The winner will receive a faceplant.
