Nickelodeon is creating a limited-edition series of celebrity-designed backpacks for auction this summer. With more participants to be announced shortly, Slash and Shakira along with Salma Hayek Pinault, John Leguizamo and Shakira will put their personal touches on special Dora-themed backpacks. A limited quantity of each backpack will be auctioned off globally, in countries including the United States, France, the UK, Mexico, Canada, Spain, The Netherlands, Greece, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. One hundred percent of the U.S. proceeds will benefit the Children’s Defense Fund. One hundred percent of international proceeds will go toward childhood education in each respective country.

So, Slash and John Leguizamo are designing Dora the Explorer backpacks to be auctioned off in Greece? No, that can’t be right. Too ridiculous. Hmmm. What a fun puzzle!

On last night’s excellent 30 Rock, Jack learned that Elisa, Salma Hayek’s character and “The One,” had a dark secret: she killed her husband and earned the nickname “La Viuda Negra,” or The Black Widow. Also, everyone wore a Slanket, which internet nerds will remember was the original, but totally forgotten first version of the Snuggie. The Slanket people, forgotten by history and people’s money until now, will no doubt take great comfort in their 30 Rock (non) product placement, even if it was implied that the Slanket is filled with farts. Anyway, NBC made a real website for La Viuda Negra, and I translated it with babelfish, and it’s funny!

30 Rock Is Winking At Us

Sometimes I wonder if the viewers out there who aren’t watching 30 Rock are dismissing it because they don’t get the little obscure references and nerd-bait easter eggs, because for me, aside from Liz and Jack’s complex and fascinating relationship, the little pop culture nods are the best part of the show. (Best one ever: “You can’t have a lemon party without old dick!”) Anyway, while the Jon Hamm storyline continued to be funny (“stew”, ha!) the other subplots of last night’s episode were chock-full of little inside jokes, including one specially-made to delight any fan of either Alec Baldwin’s career or mid-’90′s post-Basic Instinct sexual thrillers. So I’m gonna focus on those.

Salma Hayek set down the glass of champagne and smoothed out the creases in her elegant black ballgown. She had been pacing her glamorous super-expensive and fancy hotel room for hours now, nervously rehearsing her acceptance speech and rubbing her clammy hands together. She was so nervous! To think that only a few years earlier she had been just another actress, living with Edward Norton and riding around in limousines. She had never breastfed a baby in her life, and now here she was, accepting the most prestigious breastfeeding award in the whole world. It was incredible.

“You are live the dream, Mees Hayek,” she said to herself in the mirror.

I’m not sure why I’m putting this here, except that it doesn’t seem to be anywhere else (Other than breastfeeding sites. We all read those, right?) On Nightline the other night while we were all watching Dave or whatever, Salma Hayek and Elizabeth McFadden went to Sierra Leone to raise awareness of children in poverty there, and when Salma found a hungry baby, she whipped out her breast and breastfed him on camera. I guess that’s kind of a first for television? So here’s that:

30 Rock: Salma Hayek Must Go

Well, that was the weakest episode of the season, and I place the blame squarely on Salma Hayek’s lovely but miscast shoulders (She even seems to throw Alec Baldwin off his game! Probably because he can’t understand a word she says, either. She’s on TV. She can afford a coach.) In a plot that seemed like one too many writer’s strike satires, Liz Lemon misses her vacation in “Saint Bartleby’s” because she refuses to be elitist and get a flu shot when there aren’t enough shots for members of the crew (though she eventually gives in.) But there were a few funny parts, including the triumphant return of Dr. ~~Specimen~~ SPACEMAN, and Tracy Jordan’s shopping “montage.” Both are after the jump.

30 Rock: Peter Dinklage Steals Salma Hayek’s Spotlight

Much was made about Salma Hayek’s recurring role as Jack’s love interest on 30 Rock, begun last night when he hired her as his evil mother’s nurse. But despite her beauty and dramatic talent, Hayek didn’t really fit in with the pace of the show. As punchline after punchline fell flat, I couldn’t help but wish she had her own laugh track to let us know when something was supposed to be funny. The real star of this week’s episode was Peter Dinklage as the “United Nations Commissioner Of Water Temperature And Food Taint,” who a baby-crazy Liz Lemon meets on the street after mistaking him for a child. The other real star was, sigh, Sherri Shepherd, returning as Tracy Morgan’s wife to once again confuse us with her comic acting abilities. Oh, and 30 Rock mentioned a blog!
