NBC made an official announcement this morning that the contract negotiations with Conan O’Brien are complete, he will be leaving the Tonight Show at the end of the week, and that show will go back to Jay Leno on March 1st. O’Brien gets 33 million dollars of a 45 million dollar settlement, the rest paying for his staff’s severance. The good news is that Conan will be free to work for another network as early as September of this year. The (other) bad news is that the characters that he spent 16 years creating at Late Night will remain the “intellectual property” of NBC (aka Nthe Bone Cyard) and Conan won’t be allowed to take them with him. OR WILL HE? From ABC:

History may be on O’Brien’s side. NBC threatened legal action against David Letterman after the late-night TV veteran moved to CBS in 1993 and began using characters and sketches from his old NBC show. Letterman eventually dropped some of his staples and changed the names of others, according to the Hollywood Reporter, but his classic “Top 10 List” survived.

“It was a wash,” New Yorker media critic Ken Auletta told ABCNews.com. “At some point, you make a decision [and say], ‘I’ve got to cut my losses here and make this go away,’ and that’s what happened to Letterman. NBC finally said, ‘Make this go away … it doesn’t help us.’”

Oh, OK. Let’s just do that then! Let’s rename Conan’s characters for his new show! R.I.P.ESE NUTS! I will leave it up to you guys, because if I do it everything will just be Briumph the Binsult Bomic Bog, and Bimpbot B000, and the Basturbating Bbear. Lazy.

On last night’s (UPDATE: rerun, but whatever) Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog made his Los Angeles debut, going around to expensive LA “dog hotels” and making jokes about what a horrible and ridiculous and insulting and depressing thing that is. What I thought about while watching this, though, was not so much about how rich people will always find increasingly bizarre and disgraceful ways to spend and flaunt their money (revolt!), but about how the Internet will always lose the battle to old media (what an important battle! I am so nervous to see how it all turns out!) as long as the Internet lacks the means to put together the talent and the production value of television. Because this clip, which isn’t even the funniest Triumph the Insult Comic Dog clip…it might not even be in the top 5 Triumph the Insult Comic Dog clip, is still funnier than almost anything “intentionally funny” that I’ve seen on the Internet in a long time* (unintentionally very funny trampoline accidents aside).

I used to work at Comedy Central in a job that involved reading the emails that people sent in. There were three main types of emails: 1. Crazy, 2. Stop Showing MadTV Reruns All Day, and 3. Why Isn’t TV Funhouse On DVD Yet? The MadTV reruns keep buttering the daytime programming bread, but this week the short-lived but beloved 2000 series TV Funhouse is finally available on DVD, including such sacred-cow-slaying gems as the adventures of Stedman Graham:

Years later, we still know no more about Stedman Graham. (Via Aziz Ansari’s blog.) TV Funhouse the series (not to be confused with Robert Smigel’s TV Funhouse SNL shorts) became both Neflixable and buyable yesterday.

Say what you will about You Don’t Mess With the Zohan (“it looks terrible,” “it looks horrible”), it has an undeniable pedigree of amazing talent behind it. Written by Robert Smigel and Judd Apatow? As painful as the movie looks, it gets a begrudging pass on the strength of Smigel alone. The Onion AV Club has an interview with him today, which on the one part it’s great to get to read an interview with him, and blah when he talks about the movie. It was written in 2000. It’s too bad irony died on 9/11 but this project survived. But he also has some tips for political satirists in the coming years:

The Onion: It seems like Obama would be a difficult subject for satirists.

Robert Smigel: I think he has a lot of funny moves that people will be able to pick up and imitate. I think Obama and McCain are both funny. They’re just no Hillary. There’s just too much going on there for either of those guys to possibly compete. For Obama, it could be a John Kennedy situation where everybody is going to invest all this hope and optimism, idealism, but John Kennedy was probably the first president to be subjected to a great deal of satire once he was elected. Maybe it was because he had a funny accent.

Funny moves? What are Obama’s funny moves? Does he mean these funny moves?

Oh good, just what we needed, a second trailer for You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.

Can someone tell me what’s wrong with this movie. I mean, obviously it’s terrible. But it was written by Robert Smigel and Judd Apatow. Mariah Carey’s in it, and we know she’s a bankable movie star. Is it just Adam Sandler? Is he the fart bomb at the perfume party? Although it just be him (watch it, Schneider). Remember when The Hebrew Hammer came out? That was terrible. Whenever Jews get together and try to make a FJBJ superhero-style movie, it’s a) always a comedy because you know how much We love to joke around, and b) the worst.

I do, however, love the production stills.
