Aww, poor Tom Cruise! He is really getting hammered in the press this week. Well, he is getting hammered in the on-line interviews with far lesser known people who worked with him a million years ago…press. But still! The “man” can’t catch a break. First there was a very compelling interview with Bronson Pinchot in the Onion, which you should read in its entirety because it’s great, in which he describes a young Tom Cruise’s on-set hate crimes:

Bronson Pinchot: We didn’t know [Risky Business] was going to be a big hit. We thought Tom [Cruise] was the biggest bore on the face of the Earth. He had spent some formative time with Sean Penn–we were all very young at the time, Tom was 20, I was 23. Tom had picked up this knack of calling everyone by their character names, because that would probably make your performance better, and I don’t agree with that. I think that acting is acting, and the rest of the time, you should be you, but he called us all by our character names. He was tense and made constant, constant unrelated homophobic comments, like, “You want some ice cream, in case there are no gay people there?” I mean, his lingo was larded with the most… There was no basis for it. It was like, “It’s a nice day, I’m glad there are no gay people standing here.” Very, very strange.

Haha. You want some ice cream, in case there are no gay people there? Tom Cruise sounds like he was supergood at homophobia. Just constantly cutting straight to the heart of the issue. Everyone was always nervous that he was going to bring their own sexuality-slash-love-of-ice-cream into question. Also: what an asshole! He was so young back then. Just a tiny, baby asshole, getting ready to spread his asshole wings.

And now there is an interview in BlackBook with Mary Harron, the director of American Psycho, in which she describes how Tom Cruise was the model for Patrick Bateman:

Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the classic ’80s sex comedy Risky Business with the release of the Special Edition 25th Anniversary Edition DVD, begging the question, WHAT IS UP WITH RISKY BUSINESS? I just watched it for the first time last week, and whoa. What? I don’t know if you have to have seen that movie in the theater or be some kind of asshole, but that is one of the darkest creepouts ever.

I just looked at some Amazon reviewers who gave Risky Business 5 stars (because that’s how you judge the quality of something is through Amazon reviews) and mostly what everyone seems to agree upon is that it’s a movie about teenagers that doesn’t pander to teenagers. Well that is TRUE. But a comedy? This is one of the most sinister movies I’ve ever seen.

Clearly, Tom Cruise’s official website is telling us something. Something is going to happen at noon Eastern Daylight Time today. Here is what we know: The flashing “25″ is because of the 25th Anniversary of Risky Business, which Tom will be promoting in a second appearance on Oprah today. But what is the significance of noon? Did Risky Business open at noon on May 5, 1983? Does Oprah air at noon in some markets? Will Risky Business go on sale at noon today, even though DVDs usually go on sale on Tuesdays? Or is something more sinister going on? I’ve set an alarm clock for noon. I suggest you do the same.

UPDATE: Well, that was anti-climactic. It’s just a Letter From Tom and a Tribute To Tom From Tom video, and I guess the announcement of his plans to share more of himself on his website. Tom Cruise discovers the internet!

Right now, as you know, Tom Cruise is on Oprah ostensibly promoting the 25th anniversary of Risky Business by saying the word “Suri” over and over (11 times so far), and watching it I just thought, “You know, the thing is, Risky Business still holds up as well as ANY movie from the ’80s, I wonder if the train scene is still the best?” And it is:

Though you could set almost anything to “In The Air Tonight” and it would be goosebump-inducing. I just got Tom Cruise promotional Oprah appearance rolled. I’m actually kind of excited for Monday’s Oprah, which will be a celebration of the movie.
