Do you guys ever get worried that Hollywood will suddenly start generating new material and that not every single movie will be some gently reheated nostalgic throwback property from yesteryear gussied up in a hot new outfit 3 tha kidz? I mean, that hasn’t happened yet, and they aren’t, and every movie is, but do you ever worry? Yeah, me neither. From the HollywoodReporter:

Point Break, the 1991 thriller set against the world of surfing, is getting an extreme-sports make-over, courtesy of Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros.

In the original film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, Keanu Reeves starred as Johnny Utah, an undercover FBI agent looking for a gang of bank robbers, led by Patrick Swayze’s Bodhi, amid the Southern California surfing scene. The new version, with a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer (Salt), will be set in the world of international extreme sports and also involve an FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring.

“The world of international extreme sports”? What the hell is that? Seriously, is international extreme sports even still a thing outside of Red Bull commercials? I hope that the FBI agent in the remake has to travel back in time to 1994 and stop Evil Dan Cortese. “Sick Shaun White cameo, bro!” And 100 Mickey Mouse Bucks says there is at least one “no gi” cage fight in this movie that ends in a gogoplata. So extreme. So booooooo! Tres le booooooo! (Very international.)

They are making a third Dirty Dancing movie, obviously. Since the second one did so well. It’s barely a day goes by where you don’t read another essay from Manohla Dargis about the ways in which Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights changed the film landscape forever. There is actually a funny story about Dirty Dancing Havana Nights, which is that the host of NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, Peter Sagal, wrote a serious screenplay about a love story set in the Cuban revolution and that was eventually purchased, rewritten, and transformed into Dirty Dancing Havana Nights. That’s a funny thing! Oh, Hollywood. You are aces. Anyway, Dirty Dancing 3, from Deadline Hollywood:

The new film is a celebration of one of the most beloved movies of all time. Paying tribute to the emotional excitement of first love, the thrills and complexity of sexual awakening, the soul stirring power of dance, and the classic tale of teenage Baby’s forbidden romance with Johnny Castle, the remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions.

“Amazingly it has been almost 25 years since the original film was released, but the fans remain legion, and engaged more than ever with a brand that is special and vital to them. We believe that the timing couldn’t be better to modernize this story on the big screen, and we are proud to have Kenny Ortega at the helm.” said Drake.

Kenny Ortega, of course, choreographed the original Dirty Dancing. But of course, you already knew that. “Uh, hi, Gabe, if I needed you to tell me who Kenny Ortega is then I probably should have my Dance Movie Choreographer Super Fan Club Power Member Membership Card taken away from me hahaha THANKS.” In any case, we can all agree that the timing couldn’t be better (?) to modernize this story on the big screen, and that it will definitely be a celebration of emotional excitement and the thrill of teen sex. BUT WHAT WILL THE TAGLINE BE?

(Speaking of dance movies.) That’s right, you heard me, the Dirty Dancing remake. Right now, the news of this really good idea is only coming from Production Weekly, whatever that is, and through its Twitter account no less (via ComingSoon.net). Sure. Twitter has all the best scoops on the real Hollywood news. From this probably super-reliable and official Twitter:

Lionsgate is developing a remake of the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing,” from a new script by Julia Dahl.

There you go. There’s absolutely no way that you could possibly want any more confirmation than that. Anyhow, naturally one assumes that there will be some updates to the story. Like, instead of meeting at a Catskills resort, Baby and Johnny Castle will meet at a training camp for Elite United Global Forces as they prepare to join the fight against the Space Worms. And instead of a climactic scene in which they dance in front of the disapproving audience, melting their apprehensions and celebrating the wonders of movement, it will be Baby and Johnny Castle, escaping from the nuclear annihilation of the Space Worms Central Hive aboard their space hovercraft, performing a fascist victory dance.

Probably.

But before we can even get to any of that, we need to determine who will play these iconic roles in the new movie:

S. Darko, a sequel to the kinda good but overrated 2001 cult movie Donnie Darko starts filming next week, without the participation of original writer/director Richard Kelly. And fans are overreacting accordingly with a useless petition to stop production. The sequel stars original Darko sister Daviegh Chase and Ed Westwick, who plays Chuck on Gossip Girl. Plot synopsis:

The story picks up seven years after the first film when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

That sounds really boring! In fact, looking over the cast list, almost any other character in the original, from Cherita Chen to “Man In Red Jogging Suit” would make for better spinoffs. After the jump, the two best scenes from Donnie Darko, and why they should base the sequel on them.
