If you grew up anywhere from the time of 1985 until the time of today, Back to the Future is your favorite movie. Right? I think that’s generally how it works. “I really love Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and on record I’d have to go with Citizen Kane, but if I’m being honest with myself…it’s definitely Back to the Future.” – Everyone. And along with it being your favorite movie, it features your two favorite movie items that you’ve always wished existed: Hover boards and very unattractive sneakers. Yes? Well, I have some very good news for you, Marty McNERD! About a year ago, Nike patented a design for a shoe with an automatic lacing system — like from the movie, you know — and it looks like they’re putting it to use. After tweeting about “something big coming soon,” Back to the Future producer Frank Marshall tweeted this:

Going to need a lot of hover boards. #BTTF

Hahah. I guess that doesn’t really explain anything. But he also tweeted this video!

Yiiiiiiiiiikes. OK, so, this is a new advertisement for Nike, it features Tiger Woods in sadface, and the voice of his father, Earl Woods, asking him if he learned anything. P.S. Earl Woods died in 2006.

Look, I think that I am like many Americans in that I DON’T CARE ABOUT TIGER WOODS’S PANTS. As far as I am concerned, he is a multi-million dollar celebrity athlete, and I EXPECT him to be out drumming cocktail waitresses. But, I recognize the discrepancy between his squeaky clean media image and his squeaky gross sexual obsessions, and we do live in America, where the cycle of despair and redemption must constantly be renewed. So a certain amount of “soul searching” (yeah, right) and “rebranding” (more like it) are to be expected. But this? Yuck. Aligning the dissolution of one’s marriage with the world’s most recognizable sportswear brands as a tool for selling more breathable heat-tech tees is one thing (or vice versa, well played, Nike?) is one miserable thing that would be a mistake, but invoking the memory of one’s dead father as a limp-wristed attempt to turn the entire fiasco into a personal growth opportunity? But still in tandem (always in tandem) with the sportswear brand, so that hopefully you can grow together?

A rare miss, every single person involved in every step of envisioning, planning, writing, producing, directing, editing, lighting, sound-mixing, and catering this. Except for Tiger Woods. He seems to have really raised the bar on his misses these days! Congrats?

Did Nike bump its head or something? Because they could have made this ad with any celebrity. Angela Bassett for example. That woman from Spanglish who looks like Penelope Cruz but is not Penelope Cruz. It’s not like Taylor Momsen’s the only one who people would believe could actually do parkour or something. No one believes that. If anything she makes this ad even harder to accept because I don’t actually think that Taylor Momsen is surrounded by paparazzi when she leaves the gym. I feel that she can safely and comfortably get to her chauffeured (chauffeured because she’s 15, not because she’s famous) Land Rover without going all District B13. My guess is that Taylor Momsen’s days are pretty free from harassment, at least paparazzi-wise. The people crowding around her to tell her that Jenny Humphrey is one of the least likable characters on television and a dangerous cultural touchstone for teenage girls who are looking to pop culture for cues on what is appropriate behavior is another story. Then it’s all like “did you have to blow up the embassy, James?”
