This Is Your Music Video: Alternate Reality’s “The King That Never Was”

As someone who used to love music videos as a teenager (or as they were called in my time, “music penny arcades”) and was sad to watch them become 15-second cannon fodder for Carson Daly’s War Machine in the 1990s, and then be basically eliminated completely from the world for a decade or so, it’s been really nice to watch the Internet become a place where music videos could be distributed and even flourish again. Not only can we enjoy them, but we can enjoy whichever ones we want whenever we want to, which is a huge improvement over programming a VCR (LOL, DU U REMEMBER?!) to record 120 Minutes at 3AM each week and fast forwarding through the Meat Puppets to get to the “Cut Your Hair” video, or whatever. It just goes to show that nothing really dies, and water always finds its level, and something something art. Then again, sometimes, you know, the opposite of everything I just said. (Via TheAwl.)

The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Brokencyde

They say that the only reliable thing in this world is change. That can be very disconcerting or very wonderful, depending on your attitude towards change. On the one hand, change can be very difficult (oh man, I can already tell that this blog post is going to be a work of GENIUS, filled with incredible INSIGHT!) and painful, or at the very least scary. It’s different! On the other hand, it can be very exciting. Who knows what will happen next?! If nothing else, embracing the world’s entropic movement towards constant change is very liberating because that means you’re not failing somehow if you can’t hold it together or keep things the way you want them. No one can. Hush now. The point is, everything is constantly moving and shifting and evolving and collapsing and destroying and rebuilding and there’s nothing to hold onto, for better or for worse. Well, almost nothing. There’s still BROKENCYDE! Those guys will never not be the fucking absolute worst. New Brokencyde video after the jump, not that you can tell the difference. According to the video, this song is called “Gravity,” but I think a more appropriate name would be “Space Sandals.” No matter! This is very romantic. Good faces. Romantic faces. Beautiful beach, can’t believe they had the budget to shoot all those love scenes on a real beach. Play this on your dates this weekend. Fall BACK in love. Get married. Have children. Build a life together. Renew your vows. Take a vacation. Retire. Learn everything that you possibly can about another human being and still realize there are some things you’ll never understand. And then, you know, heaven. TGIFFFFFF!

The Eighth Summer Jam Of 2011: Dough Hughes’s “Lights, Camera, Agent!”

Whoa. This is definitely how all the greats go their start. It’s weird that this video shows Doug Hughes wearing old man makeup to collect his Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy since clearly he is going to be taking one of those home within the next year. (And let’s also give one out to the guy playing Oldest Hollywood Agent In The World for the perfect way in which he licks his thumb before picking up the phone.) Obviously, Doug Hughes is very talented (and has great taste in hats) although I do think it is pretty ballsy of him to think one day he will be as good as Brad Pitt in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a movie best known for its acting. Then again, fortune favors the bold, and Doug Hughes is nothing if not bold. I mean, he put this on YouTube for everyone to see! It does not get much bolder than that. The real question now, though, is how mad is Xan Spencer right now? And how do you know he isn’t just ACTING really mad?! (Thanks for the tip, Max.)

The Music Video For LuAnn DeLesseps’ “Chic, C’est La Vie” Is UNACCEPTABLE

For those of you who are lucky enough not to know this for some reason, LuAnn DeLesseps is a character from The Real Housewives of New York. She used to be called “Countess” LuAnn DeLesseps because she was married to a count, but he divorced her. (She held onto the title and calls herself that, but Videogum is old fashioned and does not recognize divorced landed gentry.) Being on any of the Real Housewives properties includes the contractual obligation to record at least one horrifically awful “pop song” per cast member per show at some point or else they have all their wigs taken away from them. That is just a legal obligation. But the agreement says nothing about insane garbage music videos. Nevertheless, LuAnn felt compelled to make one for her song, “Chic, C’est La Vie” (goood name for a sooong!) and it is completely unacceptable. Like, we are all very glad that New York legalized gay marriage last week, but with that out of the way it’s time for Albany to get some REAL work done, namely passing laws banning The Real Housewives from making music videos because NO.

Chet Haze Official Music Video, Son!

Just days after his first real big boy concert, Chet Haze is dropping (am I doing this right, Chet? “Dropping your joint,” right? Explosion sound effect?) his first official music video for his song “Another Chance.” Actually, it’s pretty clear that the video was recorded AT his first real big boy concert. Awww! It’s kind of like when they videotaped my haftarah portion the day before my actual bar mitzvah because you couldn’t actually have videocameras in the synagogue during the actual service because God would be mad. Or sad? God would definitely be something. To make it even more like a bar mitzvah, Chet Haze seems to have given the audience that tried-and-true bar/bat mitzvah party staple: the glow necklace. Hey, remember that other Eminem video when the Hobbit from Lost had a hotel fight with Megan Fox in a song about domestic violence? Those were the days. I’m not even sure what is going on in this video. I feel like I’ve already seen this video and it was a movie starring John Cusack and it was dumb then too. Did M. Night Shyamalan direct it? Just throw water on him! Hit a glass of water with a baseball bat and Eminem will go back to space. (He has an alien face now from Planet Yikes from the Too Much Surgery Star System.) Sasha Grey, though, you guys! Love her work. Very big fan of her work.

Britney Spears’ New Comedy Video: “I Wanna Go”

Britney Spears’ new video, directed by Chris Marrs Piliero, was released today and it is very strange! Full of clothes from the early ’00s, jokes, and references to Half Baked for some reason. My one complaint (just this one, the rest of what I have is praise) is that it seems like these days every single pop song by a female, this one for example, is about how they’ve spent their whole lives playing by the rules and now they don’t want to play by the rules anymore. Which is a fine enough thing to sing about, I guess, but do we ALL have to sing about it? What is the group of three people who write all the pop songs called, The Matrix? It is, I looked it up on Wikipedia. Well, if The Matrix is reading this: Please write all the pop songs about a different thing, Kelly Conaboy is bored of this thing. Now, for the praise! Just kidding kind of:
