This is an incredible, almost perfect news story. It really has it all. It has laughter AND tears. And also barf. Richard Cohen is clearly your boyfriend. Your straight, totally normal boyfriend. You can tell he is straight from the face he is making in that photo at 0:30. That is where the slang-term “straightface” comes from. Anyway, obviously the part where he does hug therapy on a couch and then also beats a pillow with a tennis racket while screaming about his mom is MUST SEE TV. Nah-doy. And his magnet demonstration is very convincing. He’s like a regular Bill Nye the Science Guy (another paragon of heterosexuality). And for the most part this whole mildly-hilarious segment reminds me of this classic Mr. Show sketch:

Bob And David Remind Us Again Of How Uncool TV Executives Are

The Onion‘s Decider has a good interview with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross today about some shows they’re doing together in Chicago. There are all of the usual questions everyone asks of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, and also there’s this answer by Bob, after David hangs up:

Bob: When you asked if we were gonna work together in the future, what could we say? There has to be a buyer who wants us. And as much as we have fans, clearly nobody likes us well enough to make a show with us. They’ll all have a meeting with us, but even HBO doesn’t want to have a show with us.

D: You guys have another show idea?

Bob: Yeah, we do, actually. We pitched it. We went to Showtime and HBO. It’s a progression of Mr. Show. When we wrote Mr. Show, we would write sketches and then we would link them up. We wrote sketches that came out of a sense of story. So we want to do that show now. It would still be like Mr. Show, but the sketches wouldn’t be constructed separate from each other. It would be a fundamentally different show because of that.

D: So you pitched it around?

BO: We did, and basically everyone said, “Oh, we don’t have any money right now. Come back next year.” It’s always been this way. It’s always been difficult for us because we have fans. We even have fans at networks–at HBO and Showtime–but it’s just not good enough. I think the hard part is the bosses at those networks have never been fans of ours. They’ve never really watched us or known who we were or given a shit. So the problem is even if the lower-level executives like you, they can’t order shows. They just act like they can.

That sounds depressing, but surely Obama will get around to fixing this soon, right after North Korea and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. And, actually, as frustrated as Bob sounds, both Bob and David have stuff going on separately. BUT! Also in the interview, they brought up peoples’ favorite Mr. Show sketches, including “The Story Of Everest,” which I just watched for about the 100th time and was HOWLING laughing so hard I’m sure my neighbors could hear me. So here’s that. “I would like to hear a funny story!”

The only event worth turning on my computer to see last week was Kathy Griffin’s New Year’s Eve slip-up on CNN, in which an innocent conversation with Anderson Cooper about The Real Housewives went awry when, after persistently screaming at unseen, unheard hecklers in a shrill muppet-frog voice, Kathy, thinking she was off-air, yelled “I don’t come down to where you work and slap the dicks out of your mouth!” Lest anyone credit Kathy’s own wit with this classic comedian’s response to hecklers, the video, and the expression’s Mr. Show With Bob And David connection are after the jump.

The Promotion: “Election In A Supermarket”

The Promotion premiered at SXSW this year to enthusiastic reviews and comparisons to Office Space and Election. (Cinematical calls it “Election in a supermarket.”) It’s another comedy about “ordinary” people, in this case two Chicago supermarket employees (Seann William Scott and John C. Reilly) sabotaging each other in a battle for the same job as manager of a new store. What sounds like a high-concept, unoriginal premise looks from this new trailer to be done with surprising subtlety and intelligence. Seann William Scott seems to have fully let go of the Stiffler act, and John C. Reilly’s Canadian accent is hilarious. MMA To Hit CBS, Hard

For people who are fans of fighting and televised fighting, the following news could really go either way. As the NYT reports:

CBS is looking to the organizers of a popular competition called mixed martial arts (MMA) to supply some programming for the often-overlooked Saturday night time slot.

“It’s original programming for Saturday night, it’s live, creating an event atmosphere, and it’s something that hasn’t been seen on network television, until now,” Kelly Kahl, the chief scheduler for CBS, said in a press release.
