Similarly, Louis CK was on Late Night last night! He talked a lot about the money he got from his standup special, which is news that I have zero interest in hearing about, but then he talked about the charities he’s giving some of it to and it was very funny. You win again, Louis CK! -LateNight

Michael And Michael Have Promise!

Michael and Michael Have Issues premiered on Comedy Central last night, and it had some laffs in it! We could all use some laffs. Especially after 9/11*. Now that was a SUMMER BUMMER. Anyway, sketch comedy shows are hard because you’ve got to string the different sketches together with some kind of over-arching framework, and that is never really very good. Like, I’m a huge fan of Chappelle Show (who isn’t? Your stepdad thinks Chappelle Show is “da bomb”) but his interstitial on-stage stuff was just filler. Same thing here. That’s OK, though. That is how it works. And besides, the use of a behind-the-scenes-production-staff plot to string things together was smart and pretty funny. And if the sketches are good, who cares?

And thus concludes Videogum’s The Problem With Sketch Comedy Shows University.

David Wain put this up on his blog yesterday: apparently 13 years ago, he and State members Kerri Kenney, Ben Garant, Michael Showalter, and Michael Ian Black made a commercial for the then-new Game Boy Pocket. I feel like if I saw this now I would recognize their voices, but probably not:

The State Is Definitely For Real Coming Out On DVD

I have a new saying that isn’t going to catch on for things that are always about to happen but never actually happen, like The State coming out on DVD or an Arrested Development movie existing: “Trailer or it didn’t happen.” There is now a trailer for The State‘s July 14 DVD release, and even as a fan of The State, this trailer got me more excited than I thought I could be. In addition to being exciting news in itself, it’s also going to open up a whole new world of every single interview with any of these actors no longer including a stupid “When is The State coming out on DVD” boring question. Yay!:

This is basically just Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black messing around for slightly too many minutes while they’re supposed to be working on their show, Michael And Michael Have Issues, but I don’t think we need to see anybody else do a Billy Bob Thornton Being An Ass parody:

I think my favorite part of this video besides the moment when the camera first cuts to MIB is the fact that you can hear other people actually working in the background. “What are Michael and Michael doing?” “Oh, a Billy Bob parody. Of course.”

Comedy Central announced today that Michael And Michael Have Issues, starring Michaels Showalter and Ian Black, will (finally) premiere in July. This almost makes up for their choice of Larry The Cable Guy as this year’s roast subject.

In Defense Of Stella

Stella is making videos for the internet now. Again.

Obviously, Michael Showalter, David Wain, and Michael Ian Black don’t really need defending. They’re beloved by sweaty, greasy-haired comedy nerds the world over. The live shows! The midnight screenings of Wet Hot American Summer! But even those comedy nerds turned their back on Stella‘s Comedy Central show. Even Lindsay, the sweatiest, greasiest-haired comedy nerd there is, if pressed, will admit that she did not really like it!

Well, I did. I’m, like, so cool. I totally buck all the trends. Have you heard of Fleet Foxes? Well I’m already over Fleet Foxes. IMPRESSED? There was something about the fact that Stella so obviously didn’t care what I thought of it that I found appealing. So I’m glad to see them back with their trademark brand of college knock knock humor. Watching a bunch of people work so hard to make each other laugh at the expense of the audience’s patience can really backfire, as it did in the case of Stella‘s failed TV show, but it’s also kind of charming, and sometimes even amusing. Amusing!

I rest my case.

The First Ten Minutes Of Reality Bites Back Do Not Bite

Via CC Insider, Comedy Central has put up the first ten minutes of its new reality TV parody Reality Bites Back, where comedians compete for 50k real dollars by undertaking a series of challenges based on reality show cliches. Yes, it’s kind of a muddled premise, but the first ten minutes of the show, in which the comedians say extremely raunchy things in a dark room and then find out their mothers are there, looks promising:

“Hi, I’m Michael Ian Black. Very famous.” I hate when people say they hate MIB because he’s “smug.” MIB knows he’s smug. He’s trying to be smug. That’s his whole entire thing.
