Couples Retreat Somehow Gets Worse

Couples Retreat, this fall’s most thinly veiled paid vacation for Vince Vaughan and his friends, was already obviously terrible. We all know that. No one is wondering whether or not Couples Retreat, a nominal “comedy” in which three unhappy couples go to Hawaii for almost no reason other than that the stars of the movie wanted to go to Hawaii, is unfunny and miserable, much like the characters’ marriages. But somehow this movie has managed to get even worse now that the token black couple has been Photoshopped out of the movie poster in the UK’s marketing push. From the Mail:

The makers of a hit Hollywood film are at the centre of a race controversy after removing two black actors from a poster being used to promote it in Britain.

A spokesman for makers Universal Pictures confirmed the poster had been changed to ‘simplify’ it for the UK and international market outside America. The studio said it regretted causing offence and has abandoned plans to use the revised poster in other countries.

Sex And The City Is Actually Okay (If You Watch It On TBS)

So last night I was over at a friend’s house and she suggested we watch an episode of Sex And The City on TBS. So we did. And it was…good? I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on. The friendships were believable, the plot was thought-provoking, and there was a strange absence of bad puns. As I walked home from the subway I pondered this bizarre occurrence. I know I must have hate-watched every episode of SATC over the years on HBO. Why would watching it on TBS make it better? And then, an epiphany:

Wednesday night, David Letterman earned hand slaps from Kristen Davis for intentionally referring to her movie as “Sex And The Shitty.” Last night his guest was Sarah Jessica Parker, and it wasn’t enough to announce the well-known rumor that someone in the movie dies, he also allowed her to laboriously set up a clip from the movie, and then showed some racy stock footage instead:

She got porn-rolled.

Yesterday, I began begging for actual plot details from the Sex And The City movie. If you’ve seen the movie, think of sending me spoilers anonymously as a form of protest against the fascist SATC press regime, which refuses to allow the movie to be seen in any kind of critical light (yet). I just think that if these people and this movie are going to be in our faces constantly, we should at least have the opinions of reasonable people and not just self-selected SATC groupie/zombies following every order Sarah Jessica Parker hands down to them. Especially with all the bad shit going down in the world right now, and the election, and the environment.

Hey gals, are you ready for a sneak peek at the Sex And The City movie? Well here it isn’t, because it’s becoming increasingly clear that all press for this movie (starting with Oprah) is going to involve carefully selected highly uncritical female reporters squealing at the show’s stars about how much they loved the movie. (But don’t worry, they won’t say anything about it except that it’s great! The clothes, my God, the clothes! The shoes, oh Jesus, the shoes!)

Surely someone out there exists who has seen the movie and is willing to spoil it for real. This is not a matter of National Security. I know the movie has been screened for reporters (and random bloggers) who signed things, but if you email me I will absolutely guarantee your anonymity.
