American Beauty won the 1999 Academy Award for Best Picture. Whoops! This is a pretentious, misguided, ham-fisted film. But the Academy’s decision actually makes more sense if you look at what the film was up against. The other nominees that year were The Cider House Rules, The Green Mile, The Insider, and The Sixth Sense. Really? An M. Night Shyamalan movie And The Green Mile both nominated for Best Picture in the same year?! WHOOPS REDUX! As much as it pains me to say something like this–because talk about pretentious, misguided, and ham-fisted–but American Beauty is the very definition of a “pre-9/11 movie,” if there is such a thing. It depicts and is of a world that no longer exists. A world in which The Green Mile and The Sixth Sense could be competing for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. A world in which it seems to be agreed that the emotional struggles of teenagers are as valid as the emotional struggles of adults (they’re not, sorry teenagers). It depicts that world poorly, and its depiction has not aged well, but if there is one thing we can take away from this portrait it is that for as horrible as 9/11 was, maybe we’re better off now, because yuck.

The Men Who Stare at Goats trailer, you guys:

On the one hand, I’m glad that they turned Jon Ronson’s book into a movie, because Jon Ronson’s book was great, and Jon Ronson is great, and it’s great when great things happen to great people. On the other hand, they should have just made this a documentary. Jon Ronson is actually very personable and entertaining. He could have carried the movie. Instead of Ewan McGregor and his Nowhere Man Voice. What is that accent? He’s like an alien whose transcoder only has one setting. “Just talking normal like a human being from the city of Earth. Nothing weird about the way I am talking, no way.” Also, if it had been a documentary, then the very weird and hilarious details from the book, which are real, would have been super weird and super hilarious because of how when things are real then there is no willful suspension of disbelief, there is just belief and disbelief mixed together, because that is life, jump into life. Instead, it has a semi-generic, strangely common-place military farce feel to it (has anyone else noticed how common-place military farces have become? It’s a real catch-22).

But, you know, wish they had made it into a documentary in one hand, and buy your ticket to the movie they did make with the other hand, and see which one is in a bucket of popcorn first, as the old saying goes.

Kevin Spacey is back! Or, it seems, Lester Burnham from American Beauty has come back to (spoiler) life and become a celebrity shrink, but who cares! Apparently I will mark any trailer that features dark comedy, fake celebrities, a knowing, meta film reference (“I’ve seen Ordinary People“), Kevin Spacey being back, the idea of a person who helps others while being a druggie mess himself, epiphanies that come at the strangest times, redemption, and, ESPECIALLY, the song “Chicago” by Sufjan Stevens, as an automatic must-see. Also, Robin Williams is in it. Make fun all you want, I don’t care, I think it looks great! For real. Let the healing begin!

A routine wikipedia search for Pay It Forward actually turns up two separate results. One, obviously, is for the Haley Joel Osment film that we are about to discuss, but the other entry is for the very idea of paying it forward, which can supposedly be traced back to Benjamin Franklin?

The concept was described by Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to Benjamin Webb dated April 22, 1784:

“I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only lend it to you. When you [...] meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro’ many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.”

So Benjamin Franklin is responsible for this movie? Uh oh, someone should probably check his grave. I have a feeling the one he has has been rolled in too much! (I discovered eleczingcity!)

Remember when Kevin Spacey was considered a good actor? It happened between 1995 and 1999. In 1995, both The Usual Suspects and Seven were released, and Spacey earned an Academy Award for his role as Roger Kint in The Usual Suspects. In 1999 he was again awarded an Academy Award for his role as Lester Burnham in American Beauty. That’s not to say that Spacey hasn’t had some minor triumphs before and since then, but those were really the golden days of Spacey. At this point, the shine has worn off. People don’t even care if he’s blowing guys in his trailer anymore. I think his fall from grace has to do with the fact that he has absolutely no range. His characters are always bemused and detached, watching the movie that’s going on around them as if they aren’t a major part of it. Splash some cold water on your face, Kevin Spacey, you’re a fucking movie star. Act like it.
