If anything, it would be weird NOT to see a photograph of Michelle Obama looking on as Al Roker and Kelly Ripa go Lady and the Tramp on a crepe. I’m sure if this photo didn’t exist, the President of the United States would have reached across party lines to get an emergency bill signed into law creating a government-subsidized task force to organize a photo of Michelle Obama looking on as Al Roker and Kelly Ripa go Lady and the Tramp on a crepe. Even John Boehner would be like “the people have spoken!” So, people, you got what you wanted, now caption it.

Last night, the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics were cut short (on the East Coast) so that NBC could broadcast a half-hour sneak preview of Jerry Seinfeld’s new show, The Marriage Ref. Now, I don’t care about the Olympics, or winter for that matter, but I still feel like both of those things deserve a modicum of respect, such that a world celebration of the human spirit can finish on its own time and doesn’t need to be pushed aside or cut short for a painfully bored billionaire’s existential crisis. Look, I can’t imagine what it’s like to be Jerry Seinfeld. Trapped in that giant mansion with that plagiarist wife of his, knowing that the best work of his career is most certainly behind him, sitting in the bay window with a glass of warm vodka, staring out at the helipad and wondering how many years he has left until it all disappears forever and he’s just another footnote in the dustbin of Wikipedia. I’d probably get antsy too! But I like to believe that I wouldn’t take out that antsiness on the rest of the world in the form of a brutally unfunny garbage reality show that seems like it’s some kind of joke being played on the world by Randolph and Mortimer Duke to resolve a one dollar bet.

The show opens with an animated Jerry Seinfeld explaining what the show is about. It’s actually not that complicated, conceptually: a married couple comes on with a lighthearted dispute, and a celebrity panel of judges determines who is “right.” The end. But Seinfeld seems to believe this is a personal project (a very special reality TV), or maybe it’s that he realizes it is miserable but wants to use his star power to somehow sell it to people as a test of his remaining cultural clout, and so the explanation devolves into a weird story about Seinfeld arguing with his own wife, which is the apocryphal story he keeps telling to the press about the show’s original conception, with the ACTUAL POINT being that we all argue in our marriages, even bored millionaires if you can believe it, which is an OBVIOUS but also DISGUSTING point to make, and it also complicates what should be a simple enough lead-in, so that by the time the show starts we are entirely confused. Good start, show!

Although, what starts as mild confusion quickly dissolves into disgust.

You Can Make It Up: My Shared Vacation Rental Home With Kelly Ripa

[Note: In a recent poll, more Americans said they would want to share a vacation rental home with Kelly Ripa than any other famous person, including the Obamas.]

I put my suitcase in my room and headed out to the deck to look out at the ocean/woods/mountains/pool. This was the good life! I went to the fridge and got a bottle of beer and opened the bottle of beer and took it back out to the deck and sat in what is called a “chaise lounge chair” and I drank the bottle of beer out there under the sunshine because vacation and summertime is the best.

Kelly Ripa would show up later that afternoon, and we would cook dinner together and toast to a wonderful shared vacation in our shared vacation home, and eat out on the deck in lawn furniture under the stars and catch up on all of the things that are new, which is all of them, because we don’t know each other. The next day, I guess, her husband, Mark Consuelos, and their kids would show up? We didn’t really plan it out much. Her assistant said that she would call me back but she never did. Probably that’s how it would work. Surely Kelly Ripa would be very interested in spending a little quality time with me, since we are sharing a vacation house together, without the distraction of her family, whom she sees every day. Her assistant’s name is Phoebe, and apparently she is a liar!

It’s been said that “anyone” could do a Sarah Palin impression. Now we know that’s not true. Anyone can look like Sarah Palin, but Kelly Ripa cannot do an impression at all. She sounds like she’s trying and failing to do Mike Meyers as Linda Richman. It’s borderline offensive!:

So just so everyone’s clear: Kelly Ripa cannot perform even the simplest task asked of an entertainer in the second half of 2008.

“That’s Your Boyfriend” is a game that children and adult bloggers play in malls. A couple of months ago, my friend Stephanie and I brought TYB to the internet, and from time to time Gabe and I will be pointing out your boyfriend, just in case you miss him. Egalitarians, never fear, there will be “That’s Your Girlfriend”s, too. Anyway…

This one is a double TYB and a That’s Your Girlfriend: on this morning’s Live With Regis and Kelly, the charming pair took a break from their coverage of the Iraq war, the election, and the economy, and had a good old fashioned blowing-up-balloons-with-their-noses contest (inspired by some kid somewhere who holds a record).

I’ve decided that Kelly is your girlfriend, because her line about her balloon being “50% moisture” is just the kind of gross thing your significant other would say.
