Katie Couric’s New Talk Show To Come With The Frame

At long last, America can dry the flop sweat from its brow, confident that it won’t just pop right back out. And we can hug our children firmly and reassuringly without swelling with adult fears and doubts, and we can sleep at night without wearing a mouthguard to keep us from grinding our teeth down to nubs. Yes, the name for Katie Couric’s new talk show has been announced! It’s Katie! Gooooood name. Worth the wait. I like how it’s clever, but not intimidating. Also, the first poster has been released, seen here. Uhhhh. Hahahah. Look, jokes aside, Katie is a perfectly reasonable name for a Katie Couric talk show. I get it. But WHAT is this poster? It looks like she’s about to champion the benefits of women getting enough folic acid in their diet. (Episode 201: guests Lauren Graham and Folic Acid discuss the day’s hot topic: SWEATERS!) This poster does not really make me want to watch a talk show* but it does make me want to join a mah-jongg club. From the Hollywood Reporter:

Details on Couric’s new syndicated talker are being held closely to the vest but Disney/ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney told The Hollywood Reporter in June that the show would be “topical” and “capture the zeitgeist of what people are talking about.”

Totally. Totally. Fer sure. When I look at this picture there is one word that immediately pops into my head: ZEITGEIST. I am curious what the tone of her show is going to be, you know? Like, on Ellen, Ellen comes out in her sneakers and vest and does her little dance. She’s fun! She’s kicky! People know that about her. Katie’s got her work cut out for her to definer herself in a crowded field. My guess is that she’s going to try and stick with what comes naturally to her, so the show will have an overall tone of skin-tearing shark smiles and terrifyingly HUNGRY eyes. And also zeitgeist, of course. All filmed through a vaseline-smeared lens stolen from the Sears family photo department because one last time: WHAT IS THIS PICTURE?!

I know that I am not the intended audience for Katie, and that perhaps this poster directly appeals to the middle-aged, mildly incurious women that ARE the show’s intended audience, and that’s fine, but I would just like to say to those women, ladies, you’re not dead yet! You can still put some effort into shaping a life and a world that you want to live and want to live in. You don’t HAVE to watch stuff like this just because her impossibly expensive clothing is still muted and under-stated and kind of ill-fitting just like your clothing. Have you seen some of the new shows on the BBC over the past year? They’re great. I think you’re going to really like Downton Abbey, and you should even give Luther* a shot. It’s really really good!

What Should Katie Couric’s New Talk Show Be Called?

Remember when Katie Couric left the Today Show to take over the Nightly News desk as America’s first primetime female news anchor and everyone was like, “This is ridiculous! What’s next, a female version of The Hangover written by Kirsten Wiig?!” Well, our great social experiment has ended, and I am not sure whether or not we won or lost, but I am sure that Katie Couric is getting a new daytime talk show. From the AP:

NEW YORK (AP) — Katie Couric has worked morning TV, the evening news and will now enter the world of daytime talk in the post-Oprah Winfrey era.

ABC announced Monday a multiyear-deal with Couric to produce the talk show, set to bow in September 2012. She will work for ABC News in the interim.

YOU GET A SHOW! AND YOU GET A SHOW! AND YOU GET A SHOW! That was my Oprah impression, did you get it? R.I.P. Oprah. You are in heaven now, trying to convince the angels about the nature of your relationship with Gayle. Anyway, Katie Couric’s new show! Just what America needs, another daytime talk show! Ellen and Rachael Ray and the ladies of The View and Martha Stewart and Wendy Williams have all signed a joint statement that just says: “FINALLY!” But what should the show be called? I was thinking it should be called Katie Couric Presents Her Legs* but that might be too UPSCALE.

*JK JK JK. But also, before you get too upset about Katie Couric not being taken seriously, let’s remember that she is the one leaving the Nightly News to do a daytime talkshow, and that before she hosted the Nightly News she built her career on doing pre-morning segments on the best way to wash barbecue sauce stains out of your baby’s capri pants, SO.

Whose got Royal Wedding fever?! Everyone, probably. According to Katie Couric, everyone has it. The thing about the Royal Wedding is that it just make sense for people to care about. We live in America in the year 2011, so naturally we’re just going to gravitate to pomp and excitement of a titular prince whose brother likes to dress up in Nazi costumes getting married to a woman from Marks and Spencer (just kidding, I don’t know what that is) while that lady from Kids in the Hall watches from a balcony. So neat! So relevant to the things that we all enjoy and find important! That’s Your Hand Model Girlfriend: Ellen Sirot

“I’ve dated a few hand models in the past, sure, who hasn’t? But those relationships never worked out. I think the main problem with the other hand model girlfriends I’ve known is that they were always too self-aware. Like, they were down to Earth, normal people who simply used their hands as a way to earn a living or supplement their income from a regular day job. When you talked to them, they hardly even brought up their modeling, and if they did it was in a kind of charming, self-effacing way that let you know they didn’t take themselves too seriously and they recognized that it’s a hilarious world in which someone can make a fair amount of money just by letting someone take a picture of their hand holding a toilet brush, or whatever. I mean, who wants that? Who wants a human being who recognizes there’s nothing that special about them in a world of billions of human beings and that they just happened to have lucked out in this one tiny way that is not even particularly impressive. No, when I date a hand model I want her to be a fucking asshole. Big time. I want her voice to just ooze condescension and self-satisfaction, and I want hand modeling to be the only thing she’s capable of talking about. I want her to take pride in her virtual inability to do standard human things, such is her nightmare panic about getting, like, a papercut or some shit. Oh, I want her to just be the worst. That’s why I love Ellen Sirot. She gets it. We date.”

Leave Katie Couric Alone!

This picture of Miss Katie dancing at a 2006 party celebrating her ascension to the Evening News has been iMaking the e-rounds today, and everyone apparently thinks that it is so funny, but I don’t think it is funny at all. For one thing, there is nothing more horrible than images of white people dancing, and none of us are safe from its terrors (except those of us who are not white, which at Videogum is what, like three of us?). Whether in still photographs, or in club footage on the Real World, white people having just enough alcohol in their system to truly let their guard down and just enough confidence (confidence brought about by, say, being named the newest anchor of the CBS Evening News) to not grab the camera out of someone’s hand and smash it on the dance floor is exactly how tragedies are made. In that sense, today we are all Katie Couric.

Captain Chesley “Sully” Sulzberger finally told his story on 60 Minutes last night, and turns out Kanye West has NOTHING on Sully in the confidence department. The difference is, Sully saved a bunch of people’s lives. Watching this interview (which is worth the 11 minutes, I promise), you can’t help but think this guy should have been famous all along:

I just hope six months from now the pressures of sudden fame haven’t turned Sully into a coke-addled megalomaniac.

Katy Perry Has Seen Jesus Camp

Last night I watched the Katie Couric Grammy Special (yes, second mention today, it was a TREASURE TROVE) and found out who Katy Perry is, and also the only thing interesting about her: she’s seen the cult documentary about Christian child spiritual warriors, Jesus Camp! (Don’t worry, this skips to that part.):

We already knew from the preview clip of Katie Couric’s pre-Grammy interview with Lil Wayne that it was going to be filled with classic Weezy F. Crazy. He spits bonkers like hot fire! The full, 11 minute interview last night wasn’t really that much crazier. It’s like spilling poison on your food. Once you spill just a little bit of poison on it, your food is poisoned, and will always be poisoned, even if you keep spilling poison on your food for another 10 and a half minutes. Is there a Grammy for perfect metaphors? But it is still great. People who need role models for how to live should never have been born, indeed.
