Fair enough! I love a good movie about crooked cops whose dads were crooked cops or whatever, or maybe they aren’t crooked but their dads’ partners were crooked? Or sometimes they are crooked but their dads and their dads’ partners weren’t crooked and they would be ashamed to see what their sons had become? That kind of stuff. (P.S. Have you read Richard Price’s Lush Life yet because go read Richard Price’s Lush Life bye.) It’s also nice to see Tracy Morgan getting some dramatic work. Life imitates 30 Rock imitates life! They should have called this movie The Urban Juror! (I know that’s the wrong 30 Rock reference. Take it up with some nerd who cares.) It’s also hilarious that they don’t show him saying anything in the trailer. Kind of makes you wonder. He probably threatens to blow the whistle on the cops and then they try to arrest him under false charges and he just shouts “I GOT A PARROT PREGNANT AFTER IT TRIED TO STEAL MY WALLET!” Probably.

Pain is relative, duh. On the scale of human suffering, my Sunday nights are ICE CREAM SOCIALS. That doesn’t mean that I don’t actually cry out in pain during some of these movies. I do. But I recognize that there’s a difference between watching these movies and, say, watching these movies with the Janjaweed. The same thing could be said for the movies themselves. Orlando Bloom sure does a lot of bitching and moaning in Elizabethtown for someone who has a loving family and seems to easily make friends with everyone he meets. I’m not saying that every movie needs to explore the horrors of Darfur, but as a person who primarily lives his selfish life in a bubble of self-involvement floating on a breeze of instant gratification, I recognize that maybe that bubble needs to be popped every once in awhile, and find myself exhausted and annoyed by having to spend an hour and a half in someone else’s. Which brings us to Dan in Real Life, a bubble in desperate need of so much popping.

Chinese director Hou Hsiao Hsi has reinterpreted the classic short film, The Red Balloon, inflating it with all kinds of powerful statements about childhood and bad parenting and home-done hairstyles and stuff. I haven’t seen it, so I can’t make any real judgments about it, although I feel like the whole “Juliette Binoche is always an amazing actress no matter what” cachet kind of wore off for me 8 years ago. Besides, I’m pretty sure I already saw this movie, and it was called SherryBaby, and I turned it off halfway through because I GET IT, LIFE IS HARD AND SHERRY’S SKIRTS ARE REALLY TIGHT.
