A Preview Of The Lost Season Finale

The Lost season finale airs tonight. There’s a lugubrious article in the New York Times that analyzes some of the show’s deeper seeded references (the public relations lady on the transport plane in the last episode is named after a Nazi propagandist) and drops a crazy 9/11 reference for why the show is good (SPOILER ALERT it’s because of 9/11).

But who wants to read when you can watch sneak clips?

The prophecy is true. We already know that Jack totally regrets it whenever he gets drunk and hangs out near an airport runway. And he also follows Locke’s advice about lying, which I know because every flash-forward scene of Jack is him lying or making a sad face because he just lied. But the part where Locke says “It’s not an island” makes me laugh. Shut up, Locke. I mean, it’s a really weird island. But it’s still totally an island. Just like the Elephant Man was a really weird man, but still a man in the end. “He wants us to move the Elephant Man.” “I told you I would get you off that Elephant Man.” The metaphor works perfectly.

Amidst all the little mysteries and wonderment that make up Lost, a new tensely-paced over-arching mystery has overtaken the show, and luckily for us, this is a mystery I feel quite confident the creators will actually resolve. That is, how do all the Oceanic 6 get off the island together. Not, I should point out, the over-arching mystery of what happens to everyone else, which is obviously looming in the background like a polar smoke monster. But last night’s episode was wound so tight, with everyone moving in such fractured, hectic directions. It was difficult to keep track of where everyone was at any given time, and while I have faith that the season finale in two weeks will solve most of these questions, at least for the time being we’re stuck with a fragmented cast. I’ve compiled a running list of where people are throughout the show.

This season’s Lost finale is being split into three hours, with the first hour airing tonight. That’s so many minutes from now, though. Here are some SPOILERS:

I don’t think I can watch these. If they were SPOILERS for the Niki and Paulo episode that would be fine. I’d know not to bother watching. But this is the finale! There are scenes from a transport plane! Something something with a magic greenhouse! Some of us still prefer to watch our epic paranormal adventure series on a human-sized television the night of broadcast. I will meet you at the e-water cooler tomorrow to iDiscuss, but for those of you who cannot wait, you are welcome.

Each week, Lost is full of so much mystery. Here are the top 5 mysteries from last night’s episode. This post is covered in wall-to-wall SPOILERS, guys.

Man, mysteries 2 and 3 were really blowing my mind. Both Batmanuel and Colonel Daniels visited Locke BEFORE he ever got to the island?!?!? And as a child he drew the Smoke Monster?!? That island is so weird, am I right you guys? Also, Locke can see Jack’s dad, which is crazed, because that means that he’s not just a special visitation to Jack. And also, what is up with CLAIRE and her stupid FACE. I will say this: we all love mysteries, but I do not like smug mysteries. She’s so proud of herself for being so mysterious. Shut up, Claire.

Next week: At least 5 more mysteries, I’m sure.

Lost Is A Riddle Wrapped In A Mystery, Inside A Polar Bear

OK, Lost is good again. We agree on that. But it is kind of hilarious the rate at which they are adding new mysteries each week. Last night OBVIOUSLY SPOILER ALERT there was Hurley’s prophecy that Jack would be visited by his dead father, Jack’s line about how he chose to leave the island while Sawyer chose to stay, Charlotte’s mastery of the Korean language, the fact that Jack got appendicitis on the island while everyone else who was sick (Locke, Rose) gets cured, and Claire’s visitation/disappearance. AND LAST NIGHT WAS NOT EVEN PARTICULARLY MYSTERIOUS! It’s not news that this show is written for the water cooler, but this is getting ridiculous. The preview for next week’s episode actually made me laugh out loud:

New Lost Mysteries Revealed

Anyone who watches Lost knows that every episode is full of amazing mysteries, and last night’s episode probably ranks in the Top 5 of “Great Episodes For Mysteries And Stuff.” The internet is full of comprehensive web resources (web resources, what have we become?) to delve as deep into the rabbit hole (“deep into the rabbit hole” … I am the third Wachowski brother, except instead of becoming a woman, I became a guy who killed himself) as you’d like. Videogum will never be able to keep up with all of the mysteries when there are supernerds out there who are being paid by Charles Widmore himself to keep tabs on what is up.

Except for one mystery.
