It’s weird how you always kind of assume that all the celebrities are in some wonderful mansion somewhere having a really great time, frolicking in a swimming pool filled with champagne and eating double scoops of caviar out of $150 sugar cones. But then you tell yourself that this isn’t really the case. They have to get up at the break of dawn to get to the makeup trailer to have their silicone faces buffed out, and tomorrow there is the Morning Zoo Radio Bumper series they have to do for 13,000 affiliate stations, and after that they’ve got to annul last weekend’s marriage. Surely, being a celebrity is actually much more difficult and much less glamorous than it seems what with the loss of privacy and the unshakable fear that the world will discover you’re a fraud and the ever-looming Damaclesian Sword of your impending and inevitable irrelevance. We all experience some dark nights from time to time, but I bet celebrities’s dark nights are the darkerest. At least, that’s what you think. Then you see a photo that reminds you, nope, you were right the first time, they are all hanging out and it’s incredible. So much fun. Have you tried the lobster pizza and the truffle ice cream? Jeff Goldblum simply MUST give you a tour of the place just as soon as he’s finished depositing these checks into his personal ATM. Oh, fames.

FINALLY! Jeff Goldblum has made countless appearances on late night talk shows since a series of fan-created slowed-down videos of his Mac commercials and other gigs became famous as the “Drunk Goldblum” internet meme, yet no host has ever bothered to ask him about it until now. In the second half of Jeff’s interview with Jimmy Fallon on Friday, Fallon mentioned the meme, showed one of the most famous videos (a Mac ad) and showed Goldblum a new “Drunk Goldblum” video the show had created from a skit he did earlier on the show. Jeff seems to be a good sport about it, though it would have been a little more fun if he had confessed to absolutely loving the meme or something. But it’s still a major addition to Fallon’s cred as “the late night host who knows what an ‘internet’ is.”

Last night was Jeff Goldblum’s debut on Law And Order: Criminal Intent, and the entire show was HILARIOUS, not just because of Jeff’s quirky, nerd-weirdo character, but because the plot was about a bunch of Williamsburg hipsters living in a huge loft and killing each other off in an effort to take over each other’s spots in a shitty band. AND there’s a red herring about how the murders could be caused by minorities in the neighborhood who think the hipsters are displacing them. It’s ripped from the 2002 headlines! Jeff Goldblum had a bunch of really funny lines, but I’m going to have to say this exchange, with the parents of the first dead hipster, was his best work on his first episode:

Jeff Goldblum, who is awesome (duh) made a rare appearance on Letterman last night to promote his new role on Law And Order: Criminal Intent (starting Sunday.) Jeff talked about acting and did rope tricks. He also admitted that he cares a lot about how he looks, which was a set up for a story about his realization this past weekend that he shares an alarming accessory with Jessica Lange’s version of Big Edie from Grey Gardens (and both guys admit to loving the movie, so watch it!) Yesterday morning an intern at Gawker put together a montage of Diane Sawyer sounding drunk on GMA on the day after the inauguration. Then another intern put up this montage of Anderson Cooper messing up really badly many times on his own post-inaugural show. (Warning: it’s painful to watch Andy this way):

Now, maybe I’ve seen too many Jeff Goldblum videos, and Anderson clearly garbles his words in a way that can’t be faked, but this seems at least slightly slowed-down to me. I think those Gawker interns are messing with us. (UPDATE: I just emailed with Daniel Caron, who put this video together for Gawker, and he assures me that it hasn’t been altered in any way and isn’t a prank. Anderson was really that hungover. Wow.)

Recently, I was hanging out a a friend’s house when someone mentioned Jeff Goldblum, so I launched into my best “Jeff Goldblum Drunk” impression, based on the totally inspired video meme. And everyone just stared at me! Nobody had seen it! So we spent the next half hour gathered ’round the laptop, clutching our sides and wiping tears as we watched the entire Jeff Goldblum Drunk ouevre on YouTube. Twice. (So this list is clearly needed out there!) The first video in the “Drunk Jeff Goldblum” viral video meme actually reared its awesome head in ’07, but ’08 was truly the year of slowed-down and speeded-up video techniques (See Fred.) And no video thing gave me more pleasure in 2008 than Jeff Goldblum Drunk. After the jump, the top 8 videos (all either 1999 Mac ads or Conan visits, but all totally worth watching.) I just hope Jeff Goldblum loves this joke as much as the rest of us do.

The Hunt For The Worst Movie Of All Time: Powder

I have actually seen this week’s movie, Powder, before. In fact, I’ve seen it multiple times. When I was in college, back in 1963, the dorms had a closed circuit movie channel that came with your University subsidized cable subscription. They played different movies all week, but each week was the same for that month. So whatever was playing at 8PM on a Thursday at the beginning of October would play every Thursday at 8PM until November. (I know how months work!) For some reason, Powder just happened to be playing at the exact time every week for a month when I decided to watch a movie on the dorm movie channel. I’m still not sure how many times I’ve seen Powder, but it’s too many times. I remember telling myself at the time that even though it was a terrible movie, it was worth watching repeatedly because I would somehow get something out of it one day. That day has finally come. The prophecy was true!
