I know that all this time you were thinking that Rebecca Black was our generation’s Rebecca, and that they could stop trying to give our generation a Rebecca because we already have one and she’s perfect thankyouverymuch, but NOPE! You were wrong. Check it out the evidence of how wrong you were, from Variety:

DreamWorks and Working Title Films are embarking on a feature remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic mystery ”Rebecca,” that will be written by ”Eastern Promises” scribe Steven Knight, who will go back to the original book by Daphne DuMaurier.

Story follows a naive young woman who marries a rich widower and settles in his gigantic mansion, only to find that the memory of the first wife maintains a grip on her husband and the servants.

PERFECT! A remake of Hitchcock’s classic film, Rebecca. Super good idea. If we’re going to make it through the project of rebooting every single movie ever made, it just MAKES SENSE to get the only Hitchcock film to ever win an Academy Award for Best Picture out of the way early on. Definitely needs some work, definitely needs maybe Kristen Stewart and Channing Tatum to star in it this time. It’s here! The annual “Hollywood” issue of Vanity Fair! Each year, Vanity Fair publishes 4 issues with Johnny Depp on the cover, 6 issues with John F. Kennedy Jr. on the cover, one Royal Family issue, and of course the Hollywood issue. (What a great magazine! I think my favorite thing about it are the cover articles about Cher.) This year’s Hollywood cover features the following actresses: Jennifer Lawrence, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Rooney Mara, Elizabeth Olsen, Lily Collins, Shailene Woodley, Paula Patton, Felicity Jones, Brit Marling, Adepero Oduye. I will give you one guess on whether the actresses of color appear on the outside of the magazine or folded up on the inside of the magazine. (Hint: “the 1997 hit film, Amistad.”) (Vanity Fair could try to argue that the cover alignment simply represents a star’s actual box office draw, except that I’m pretty sure more people saw Paula Patton’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol than all of the movies featuring the front cover actresses combined. Ding dong! I rest my case!) This is always a very fun caption contest because there are so many choices! Will you make a The Hunger Games joke about Jennifer Lawrence? Will you make a Rooney Mara joke about what is up with Rooney Mara? Will you make a who is Mia Wasikowska joke? It’s up to you. YOU are the Hollywood big-shot now! (No, you aren’t.)

My The Black List, 2011

Since 2004, a Hollywood executive named Franklin Leonard has compiled a list of the “hottest” up-and-coming but unproduced screenplays in town as voted on by a secret elite squad of more than 300 fellow executives and fat cats. The list has helped to launch the careers of people like Diablo Cody, and whoever wrote (500) Days of Summer. Today, the list for 2011 came out, and you can read it here. Congratulations to everyone who made this year’s list. Especially a promising young man named Quentin Tarantino?! (Some people complain that the list has become a publicity tool of the studios, and that rather than highlighting unknown writers as it was originally intended to do, the list is now a collection of relatively high-profile and pre-vetted projects written by established showbiz insiders. I have no idea what half of the words in that sentence even mean, so I do not know if this is true or not, but I will say that Quentin Tarantino getting a script on The Black List definitely suggests that something might be up. Congratulations to him, though. Fingers crossed for all of his hopes and dreams.) Of course, as is Hollywood Tradition, another Black List was released today. Duh Aficionado Magazine: There Is Gender Bias In Hollywood

Duh Aficionado magazine got SCOOPED this morning, by an article in the LA Times headlined Gender inequality still has a starring role in Hollywood, USC study finds. Oh man, OF COURSE IT DOES! We should have been all over this one, and we apologize to our (male) readers for dropping the ball. Here are the most important and most obvious findings:

The USC study determined that women were still far more likely than men to wear sexy clothing in movies, such as swimwear and unbuttoned shirts (25.8% versus 4.7%), to expose skin (23% versus 7.4%) and to be described by another character as attractive (10.9% versus 2.5%).

Revealing clothing and partial nudity was just as prevalent among 13- to 20-year-old female characters as it was among those 21 to 29, suggesting that females are sexualized on-screen at young ages, Smith said.

Behind the camera, the gender inequality is just as dramatic: only 3.6% of the directors and 13.5% of the writers on the top-grossing films of 2009 were female, according to the study.

Yup. That sounds about right. Although I’m surprised this article/study didn’t at least point out the counter-argument, which is didn’t you ladies get Bridesmaids this year? How many movies do you NEED?! LOLOLOL. JK, ladies. You’re beautiful. Do you have a sister? Brad Pitt “Retiring From Acting In The Next Three Years” Movies!

Get out all of your funeral gear because we’re gonna have to throw a big one! JUST DO IT!! 47-year-old actor Brad Pitt, you may know him as “Will Colbert” from the television series Friends, has been going around telling everyone that he’s going to retire from acting when he turns fifty. THAT’S IN JUST THREE YEARS! R.I.P. movies! From NME:

The Hollywood big hitter has suggested that he will likely stop appearing on screen in within the “next three years,” but hinted that he would continue to work behind the camera. He told Australian talkshow 60 Minutes: “I’ve really enjoyed the producerial side and getting stories to the plate that may have had a harder time otherwise.”

The interview echoes previous comments about his screen career having a shelf life in the Sunday Times: “We all have a shelf life, and mine is coming. Although there are a couple of things I’d still like to do. I am looking forward to playing a grumpy old dude one day, that’s for sure.”

Obviously this is very serious. I don’t think there is any way that Brad Pitt could renege on this formal resignation that in no way hints or even states outright that he will continue acting into old age. What will Hollywood do without him?! WHO WILL PLAY ALL THE BENJAMIN BUTTONS!? I do think, though, that in a time like this Brad Pitt would rather have us celebrate the life of his career than mourn its definitely for real death. So let’s do that! With a Brad Pitt retirement movies game! YAY!!!

Paramount Pictures Building A $700 Million “Boom Boom Room”

Exciting multi-million dollar construction project news! Paramount is undergoing a 700 million dollar, 25-year-long renovation of its landmark studios. From Hollywood Reporter:

Paramount Pictures is planning a $700 million upgrade of its Hollywood headquarters, which cover 62 acres, the company said Tuesday. The studio, which has been based in its current location since 1926, is filing applications with the city of Los Angeles for what it is dubbing the Hollywood Project, a 25-year plan to improve its existing studio lot and adjacent properties.

Most of the development will take place at the studio’s main 56-acre lot at 5555 Melrose Ave., which was created when Paramount bought the former RKO Studios from Desilu Productions in 1967. Portions of the lot along Melrose and limited areas within the main production area are being targeted for development, although the studio said it will maintain many of the historic structures while modernizing them. The plan also involves six properties in Hollywood adjacent to the studio.

So dope. I’m a HUGE multi-million dollar, decades spanning, ambitious and forward-thinking brand revitalizing construction projects head. LOVE ‘EM! Cannot get enough of ‘em. This one looks pretty promising. Check out some of the planned upgrades:

SpongeBob SquarePants Is OUR Generation’s Gumby

Oh wait. A joke about SpongeBob SquarePants being OUR generation’s Gumby is not actually that funny. You know, because of how HE IS LITERALLY OUR GENERATION’S GUMBY. You know what else isn’t funny? Dudes dressing up as children’s cartoon characters and harassing women on the street. From the LA Times:

A man dressed as SpongeBob SquarePants was detained by police outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, officials said Wednesday.

The man was questioned but not arrested Tuesday in what a Los Angeles Police Department official described as a “brief incident with two females.” No other details were available.

You know what, Hollywood? How about no more adult-sized costumes of cartoon characters? They are clearly only for criminals. This is actually a perfect plan (to combat the perfect crimes) because let’s be honest, there is absolutely no reason for an adult to NEED a costume of a cartoon character, ever, not even on Halloween–Grow up, boys!–so this way if you make the costumes illegal contraband then as soon as you hear an adult ask “Hey, where are your Huckleberry Hound costumes?” you just arrest them on the spot before the crime is even committed! What do you think, precogs?
