Heath Ledger Finally Gets A Hip Hop Tribute, 2010

This is basically Heath Ledger’s touching “I’ll Be Missing You” hit single tribute. The only difference is that Heath Ledger wasn’t a rapper and doesn’t particularly need a touching hit single tribute, Heath Ledger died of an unfortunate but self-inflicted drug overdose rather than a gang-style assassination, it’s coming two years after his death, and it’s performed by a 24-year-old white rapper who I don’t think actually knew Heath Ledger in real life. Otherwise, Heath Ledger = Notorious B.I.G. of acting, for sure. (Thanks for the tip, Thor.)

The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus Looks Crazy Bananas

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus trailer, you guys:

Um…what?

Don’t get me wrong…this looks like it could be great, if I had any idea what this was. Terry Gilliam has made so many good movies, and this has so many great actors in it (and it also has Colin Farrell and Jude Law in it). Plus it was Heath Ledger’s final film, so, you know, morbid curiosity alone. And I recognize that with particularly ambitious and adventurous and bizarre projects it might be hard to summarize everything within the simple and tidy constraints of your ordinary movie trailer, but COME ON. Even just the mostly straight-forward voice over narration is a total mind-fuuuuuuuuck.

A thousand years ago, Dr. Parnassus made a deal with the devil to gain immortality. But this came with a price. Now, a mysterious outsider will take the traveling show beyond their imaginations.

I thought I was following, but then I totally wasn’t following. What traveling show? Beyond whose imaginations? Forget it, Jake, it’s the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus Town.

We don’t want to take this moment to remember Heath Ledger on the one year anniversary of his death. We don’t think that a pop culture blog posting is in any way a fitting tribute for memorializing the death of a human being, and we don’t think it would be inappropriate to let the day go by without mentioning him and how much he will be missed, however true that may be. It seems stupid, and annoying, and insulting. We definitely don’t want to be like TMZ with their stupid fucking post about how his apartment is still empty. TACKY MILE ZONE. Not that they’re even the worst offenders. We’re looking at you, COBBLE HILL BLOG. Go back to covering the goings on of Brooklyn’s finest pet grooming establishments, or whatever, we are sure that Heath’s family will understand. And relax, Pink Is the New Blog. Quit acting like you’re Heath’s best friend. You’re not. Verne Troyer is, duh.

R.I.P. respect, good taste, and sense of proportion. You are who we miss most today.

OK, Heath Ledger Was Nominated For An Oscar, Now What?

After all these months of speculation about whether or not Heath Ledger will win a posthumous Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight, he got one step closer this morning…a ghost step, I guess…with the official nomination. Now what? I mean, now we wait, but this sort of feels like the climactic moment. In fact, since The Dark Knight was shut out of most of the other categories, including Best Picture and Best Director (although it leads in the Best Terrible Batman Growl Voice category as the only nominee. Still complaining about that Batman voice, 2009!) there’s no chance of a monster Return of the Kingian sweep. It kind of feels like this is it. Especially if he doesn’t win, this is the moment, right? The big moment? We’re all talking about it! He was so good in that movie!

But I guess if he wins, that will be the big moment. So nevermind.

Oh wait, that’s right, what I meant to say was Wall-E didn’t get nominated for Best Picture, now what? These months of inter-blog Oscar Speculation has got me all turned around. In your/our face, blogs! The full list of nominees after the jump:

Mary Kate Olsen Hates Having To Go To Jail

This news has been bothering me all day. Wherever my craw is, that’s where it’s stuck. From the New York Post:

Pint-size actress Mary-Kate Olsen has refused to be interviewed by federal investigators probing the accidental drug death of her close friend Heath Ledger unless she receives immunity from prosecution, The Post has learned.

[Mary Kate Olsen]‘s lawyer has repeatedly rebuffed attempts by the feds to question Olsen, who was the first person called after her masseuse discovered Ledger’s body in his SoHo apartment in January. Frustrated federal officials could obtain a grand-jury subpoena to compel the funky “Full House” actress to tell them whatever she knows about the “Dark Knight” star’s behavior, his possible drug use and the events of that fateful morning, according to sources.

Admittedly, I didn’t go to law school. But I have watched over four hours of Law & Order: Sexy Victims Unit, so I basically know everything about our legal system, and I’m quite certain that this proves that Mary Kate Olsen murdered Heath Ledger. Right? No, that’s right. I solved it. Send her to Superjail. I rest my case.

According to the email newsletter Pop Bitch, the late Heath Ledger kept a journal on set in which he listed things that he thought would make the Joker laugh, and the first entry was “AIDS.” If nothing else, Heath Ledger should win the Oscar for Edgiest Off-Screen AIDS Joke Kept In A Method Acting Notebook. Although, I guess that’s not really a joke, right? It’s just a FACT. The Joker thinks AIDS is hilarious.

You should hear the Joker’s tight five that he does on puppies dying FROM Super AIDS. It’s very mid-80s Seinfeld. Lots of observational material. Aaron Eckhart: “Heath Ledger Will Live On Through His iPod”

Oh man, with total apologies, Aaron Eckhart and Maggie Gyllenhaal were on The Today Show this morning, and this clip from the show has been titled “Aaron Eckhart Tells Moving Story About Heath Ledger’s iPod”, so, um, yeah. It is a moving story about Heath’s friends passing along his favorite music to each other, but it would be so much less cringe-worthy if “record collection” were substituted for “iPod”:

It’s also creepy because they’re all using their weird low-toned “someone died” voices to talk about “crazy whacked out music nobody’s ever heard of” on an iPod. It is just impossible to say “iPod” in a serious context, even for Aaron Eckhart. He might want to take that story out of his Dark Knight publicity tour repertoire.

Which Exit Ramp Do I Take To Get To The Batcave?

If you live in New York, then you’re under the tyrannical thumb of Time Warner or DirectTV for your programming options. But other parts of the country are served by Comcast, who are currently offering two new Dark Knight videos through their OnDemand service. You know, for as much as New Yorkers make fun of the rest of the country (and they make so much fun, you have no idea) for being nothing but a lone stretch of industrial parkway dotted with Applebee’s and Service Merchandises, Comcast’s OnDemand is far superior to Time Warner’s. So when you go out to share a Bloomin’ Onion with your overweight family and talk about how bad traffic was today in comparison to yesterday and whether or not traffic is going to be as bad or worse or maybe better tomorrow, there is some small comfort in the fact that when you go home to your non-cramped apartment that isn’t an 18-story walk-up filled with IKEA furniture and the desperation of thwarted ambition, you’ve got way more control over when and what you choose to watch.
