The Internet has been pretty excited this week about some new developments in bringing pop culture from the 1980s to life. The website ThinkGeek has developed actual Stay Puft marshmallows that you can eat with your mouth, from the hit 1984 movie, Ghostbusters, starring Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson. Meanwhile, some designers for Nike submitted a patent application this week for self-tying shoelaces, just like the ones Martin McFlay wore in Back to the Future 2 The Streets. “I just came. Twice!” said the nerds of the world.

There is nothing wrong with either of these exciting consumer products individually, but together they suggest a larger, more concerning trend. Which is the ))<>(( of popular culture in ever-decreasing concentric circles of self-reference, until we’re going to be left with nothing. NOTHING! We no longer learn from or abandon the past in order to create the future. Instead, we aggressively recycle. Our embrace of nostalgia is suffocating. And it will only get worse. In 20 years, one can imagine the remakes of the remakes, and the ironic collectibles that are self-aware knock-offs of the original self-aware knock-offs until some sort of Large Pop Culture Collider opens a black hole in our Zunes and we’re all sucked into space where we die.

Just kidding. EAT QUISP CEREAL!

There’s a new full-length trailer for the Judd Apatow-produced, Harold Ramis-directed prehistoric/Biblical summer comedy Year One starring Jack Black, Michael Cera, Olivia Wilde from House, and all the Apatow people. I think it looks funny!:

But it seems like the reaction on the internet hasn’t been so great (take Vulture, for example: “This doesn’t look that funny.”) Oh silly, forgetful internet, I just want to muss your cute wittle hair and remind you of the First Rule Of Comedy Movie Trailers:

Thou Shalt Reserve Judgment For The Red Band Trailer.

Unless, of course, this ends up rated PG or some other sort of Apatow abomination. In which case, I still think it looks kind of funny, but boo.

The internet is astir, because someone in Hollywood has given the go ahead to two writers from The Office to write a script for a third Ghostbusters movie that would reconvene the original cast. No, David Blaine. The argument that Hollywood is out of ideas is <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=active&q="hollywood+is+out+of+ideas"&btnG=Search">a common one, and not a summer goes by without something being dredged up from Old News Lake and remade for the big business of nostalgiaploitation. Those are both true, but this isn’t even about that. And this is not some fanboy rant about not wanting to see my precious Ghostbusters tarnished by a half-assed cash grab. It’s definitely a half-assed cash grab, but the original cast is great, and writers on The Office are good writers, so at the very least it’s a half-assed cash grab with genuine talent behind it. Besides, I sleep in a big boy bed now, with man sheets, and cannot be bothered with the exhausting enthusiasms of my youth (i.e. I am waiting for death.)

But the simple fact of the matter is that cleaning up New York’s ghosts is a grim fucking topic.
