White Hancock passed by a homeless man sleeping on a park bench and super-pitied him. How these people managed to survive without shelter as an uncaring world passed them by, that was a strength he couldn’t fathom. A ragged paper cup sat at the foot of the bench, near the bum’s smelly head. White Hancock dropped a fifty dollar bill into the cup and flew up into the sky. He was going to be late for his photo shoot.

It wasn’t easy being the only superhero on the planet, feeling the crushing weight of that responsibility, but there were so many people who had it way worse. Hancock thought of the starving children around the world without access to clean drinking water, the innocent families being slaughtered in the Sudan, Kathy Griffin, and he realized he didn’t have it so bad. True, his powers could feel like a curse at times, but they were also a blessing, like his whiteness. That might have been his greatest power of all.
It’s such a great way to get your point across (it’s a horrible way to get your point across), that it’s only a matter of time before all the media moguls start talking into their i-Sight cameras (it is not a matter of time). Today’s entry is after the jump, and it features some NSFW language near the end, so headphones.

Last night’s #1 segment on Countdown With Keith Olbermann was an interview with Jason Bateman that started out about how Hancock is making him “a star at last,” but then took a turn for the not-boring exactly halfway through when Bateman’s Arrested Development co-star David Cross stopped by. After some gay marriage announcement jokes, Cross and Bateman fuel speculation about a potential Arrested Development movie that someone needs to seriously confirm or deny already. (Despite reports, they don’t really confirm it here.) It’s kind of odd to watch a Will Smith-obsessed Olbermann, a junket-weary Bateman and a who-gives-a-fuck Cross bounce jokes off each other:

This is Citizen Marketing at its best. You just get in there with your exacto knife, fuck up a famous face, switch a couple of letters around, and you’re barely even late to the unemployment office (people who do this do not have jobs). I like that this person saw the promotions for Hancock and was just like ‘BORING, WE’VE ALREADY SEEN THIS, IT WAS CALLED HITCH,” and his friend was like “But Hancock is a superhero, they’re actually really different” and he was like, “My point is still valid and worthy of the hour it will take to complete this project.”

I would like to apologize to the movie Hancock. While I still think it is true that your viral marketing campaign is the new dumbness, I also saw your new trailer last night on the television, and it looks good. Your lead actor, Will Smith, has a range limited to lightly comedic action adventures. But put him in a lightly comedic action adventure, and then create an Oscar for that category, and he would win the Oscar. Trailer, you guys:

More importantly, this is directed by Peter Berg. Do you know who Peter Berg is? Peter Berg is a triple-threat actor/writer/director. But you can throw away the first two threats and he still gets a Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket to the Chocolate Factory that is my heart for his work on Friday Night Lights the movie, and Friday Night Lights the television pilot. So you watch what you say about this project now, QB5.

If you’ll recall, when Steven Spielberg’s A.I. was coming out in 2001 (never forget), there was an innovative piece of viral marketing* in the form of a sprawling online role playing game. Around the same time there was the legendary campaign for the Blair Witch Project. These were both precursors to the current campaign for this summer’s The Dark Knight, with dummy websites, automated phone calls, and hidden bowling balls. No one, of course, has time to actually participate in these things. But, like hospitals, moms, and 24-hour Korean barbecue restaurants, it’s nice to know they exist.

But in the case of Will Smith’s remake of the classic Luke Wilson vehicle My Super Ex-Girlfriend (which was basically the There Will Be Blood of 2006), Hancock, about a lazy superhero, um, maybe they should enroll in the Viral Marketing classes at DeVry Institute for Technology. Because this is not going to cut it.

* I love in that article when it says “perform a Google.com search.”
