I finally saw it over the long holiday weekend, and boy did I love it! After all of the weird press about what a nightmare Wes Anderson was during the filming process–the general idea being that he mostly directed the movie from his Paris apartment by SEXTing the animators in England–and also that New Yorker article that was so fawning it kind of made you want to puke (the inevitable pukelash) for how much Richard Brody wants to be Wes Anderson’s boyfriend and kiss him on his recherche mouth, it turned out that nevertheless this movie is so so good. Just a joy to watch from beginning to end.

Here are some reasons that it might be the best movie of the whole year:

These behind-the-scenes clips in which Wes Anderson taped himself acting out scenes from Fantastic Mr. Fox as a template for the animators are weird. Like, good thing he is a movie director or else I would be voice-dialing the hospital right now. “Hospital.” (That’s how you do it.)

New Fantastic Mr. Fox trailer, you guys:

This movie just looks endlessly cute, charming, and endearing. I stand helpless before it. Or at least before its trailers. “But, Gabe, don’t you think that it’s just self-indulgent twee pop that blatantly disregards it’s own supposed audience of children who want flash and toilet jokes in order to appeal to an audience of over-educated, navel-gazing, 20-something Belle and Sebastian fans?” No, I don’t. I think that it looks great. And it’s 2009, people don’t talk about Belle and Sebastian anymore. Pick a better example, like Fleet Foxes.

UPDATE: I have just been informed that Wes Anderson signed the “Free Roman Polanski” Petition, so never mind. I take it all back. Put this movie in jail along with him and Roman Polanski and apparently everyone. Are you fucking kidding me with that fucking “We Support Rape-Rape” Petition?

Fantastic Mr. Fox trailer, you guys:

Oh, this looks great! It has such a nice homemade feel to it, like Wes Anderson got together with George Clooney and Bill Murray on a rainy Sunday afternoon and they put the whole thing together themselves. You remember during the 2004 election when the Democrats tried to take back the word “liberal” and return it to its proper usage as an adjective describing a particular political philosophy rather than a loathsome epithet? That didn’t work! But I feel like this movie is basically doing the same thing for the word “twee.” Gone are the bilious days of the early-to-mid ’00s when “twee” was a chuckled insult casually lobbed in the face of the skinny and pale. Now it is a badge of honor.

Seriously, though, if this movie is as good as the trailer looks, it could become the stuff of legend. Between this and Where the Wild Things Are it seems increasingly clear that the revolution will not be computer generated in South Korea!
