Saturday Night Live: Some Pertinent Questions And The Sketch They Don’t Want You To See!

There were definitely a few questions raised by this week’s episode. Like, Regina Spektor? That’s one of the questions. And also, who did Charlene Yi fuck over on the writing staff that they had to throw her under the bus on national television for the benefit of as many as 12 people who actually knew who Charlyne Yi is? Yikes. You have to admit that that was odd! “This week we’re going after Barack Obama and Charlene Yi.” Then there is this question: how is it that the funniest thing on the whole episode was Bill Hader’s James Carville expression on Weekend Update considering the fact that James Carville stopped being a serious political figure in the late 90s, or at the very least in 2004 after John Kerry’s loss to George W. Bush (not to mention Carville’s terrible and poorly received HBO show K Street in 2003, which turned him into even more of a parody of himself) and even in that case it’s been five years, and yet here we are? Huh? But oh man, wasn’t Bill Hader’s James Carville expression on Weekend Update hilarious? Y/Y?

When I first heard that Drew Barrymore was set to direct her first feature film, I immediately whipped out my No Doy Diary, scribbled five stars in puffy paint, and burnt the house down. Obviously: this was going to be a movie that I would enjoy. Perhaps it DEFINITELY goes without saying that I am not a film critic. I’ve never “seen” most “classics.” Netflix stopped recommending movies to me, and sent me a coupon for a brain transplant instead.

I’m a big, big fan of Drew Barrymore’s. I know that some people couldn’t give two shits about her, and that makes sense. But think about this: her public identity is the real life Benjamin Button (tweaked out disco MILF at 10, quirky tween goof at 34…Osh Kosh Bgosh runway model at 70?).

In 1994, on my 42nd birthday, I went to see Wesley Snipes’s Drop Zone in the theater. In Wesley Snipes’s Drop Zone, a federal marshal infiltrates a gang of criminals (led by Gary Busey, an obvious choice for “mastermind”) who SKYDIVE INTO THEIR CRIMES. It was an obvious Point Break rip-off, sure, but even more than that it seemed like a producer had taken up skydiving as a hobby and decided it would make the basis for a great action movie. He was sitting around the country club one afternoon, and he put his cigar out in his Cobb salad and smacked his overtanned forehead with his meat hand and said “what if you took the thrill and majesty of skydiving and combined it with a hackneyed story about the DRUG WAR? Hand me my checkbook, I need to write myself a check for a billion dollars.”

My point is that roller derby, a hobbyistic niche extreme sport, combined with plot, minus Wesley Snipes, plus Kristin Wiig (the thinking man’s Gary Busey. Huh?), and also the WAR ON DRUGS +/- = beauty pageants, makes this basically Drop Zone but for girls. It’s called math, guys, and it’s super cool to be good at it.

Hopefully the beautiful weather in many places this weekend didn’t stop all interested parties from doing their solemn duty and watching Grey Gardens on HBO this weekend. I’ve already mentioned what a sad, yet fun, yet heartbreaking movie it was, but maybe some of you are not such crybabies (or maybe some of you hated it!) Either way, here’s the part where Little Edie asks Jackie O. if it’s true that Jack Kennedy gave her gonnorhea, and then we’ll talk.

Drew Barrymore was on Letterman last night, dressed up like a fancy lady to promote Grey Gardens (Saturday night! HBO! Campy fun/sad times!), and as usual she was flirtatious with Mr. Letterman in a way that always feels a little weird because only Amy Sedaris is allowed to do that. Anyway, after talking about the flashing incident, Dave asked about her new tongue ring, so she showed him, explaining that she has it because she’s “a good time gal!” Get it? Because of bjs? The First Trailer For HBO’s Grey Gardens

If, like me, you thought HBO’s re-enactment of the famous original train wreck documentary Grey Gardens was kind of unnecessary, this first promo for it that aired after Big Love Sunday night shows that it’s, at the very least, a showcase for Drew Barrymore’s amazing Little Edie impression (this is the best quality version available right now):

But don’t even think about watching this movie before watching Grey Gardens the documentary first. That’s a given, but it must be said.

What We Learned On The He’s Just Not That Into You Field Trip

So as mentioned in Friday’s Friday Fight, I really did attend a sold-out screening of #1 movie in the country He’s Just Not That Into You with seven female friends, one reluctant male friend, and several boxes of Bandit box wine this weekend. Chances are, if you’re interested in this movie, you already saw it this weekend too, but if you’re waiting, here are some things we learned (without a single spoiler!) that you should know.

1. The male among us insisted upon taking a Klonopin (like a Valium, but stronger) before the movie, which was like the tranquilizer darts they give to lions before putting them in the cage. He remained docile throughout most of the movie, despite a few instances of audible groaning. He also reported several times, unasked, throughout the movie that Scarlett Johansson was “actually hot in this movie.” So, guys, there’s that.
