New Yorker film critic David Denby has created quite the dull and unimportant controversy this week by publishing his review of David Fincher’s new movie, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a full week before he was supposed to publishing it according to the embargo that he agreed to before attending a screeninzzzzzzzzzzzz. Fascinating stuff! The movie’s producer, Scott Rudin, is, in the words of the Dipset Crew, “mad.” Here was Denby’s defense of his actions (via Movieline):

The system is destructive: Grown-ups are ignored for much of the year, cast out like downsized workers, and then given eight good movies all at once in the last five weeks of the year. A magazine like The New Yorker has to cope as best as it can with a nutty release schedule. It was not my intention to break the embargo, and I never would have done it with a negative review.

[T]he early [NYFCC] vote forced the early screening of Dragon Tattoo. So we had a dilemma: What to put in the magazine on December 5? Certainly not We Bought the Zoo, or whatever it’s called. If we held everything serious, we would be coming out on Christmas-season movies until mid-January. We had to get something serious in the magazine. So reluctantly, we went early with Dragon, which I called “mesmerizing.” I apologize for the breach of the embargo. It won’t happen again. But this was a special case brought on by year-end madness.

We bought a ZING! To which Rudin responded:

Classic Ivy League style has been so hot this season! Crimson red hot! Everyone from Michael Bastian to Band of Outsiders to J.Crew.com have taken up that silver-spooned baton and run with it (in their mouths)! With reprints of the 60s Japanese Style book “Take Ivy” flying off faux-distressed mahogany hunting mantels in pre-fab mall stores across the world, it is clear that we are entering a brand new age where we are finally looking to rich white people to dictate what is fashionable.

While obviously the romanticization of pre-Civil Rights era Ivy League white men and the fetishization of their trappings depicted in sepia-toned and Kodachromed photos should be totally and utterly divorced from their glaring historical context (we just really like the clothes, ok?!), it’s clear that Americans are yearning for a time when white people were unquestionably in charge and keeping other, less stylish, people down. And no one exemplifies a powerful white man of our times keeping others down more than Mark Zuckerberg in Facebook.com: The Movie! This former Harvard John Harvard gives a modern digital twist to those classic Ivy League looks and deserves a prominent place on your fashionispiration dream board so you can work your own variations of the look. But if you want to replicate his look exactly because you have no aspirations to any independent thoughts of your own regarding your style, we have just the thing for you! Here are some great tips so that your next status update will be, “Hey, Friends! I know you hated the way I looked before and thought I was a disgusting piece of dirt, but now I Look Like This!”

As a 64-year-old man, I think of myself as being pretty “with it” when it comes to the Net. But the first time I heard of Facebook was from my younger brother, who asked me if I was on it, and I said “on what?” He laughed at me, and switched all the pills in my pill box to the wrong days of the week. It was humiliating! (He actually did say “you’re old” to me. It’s sad that he’s dead now and in heaven. R.I.P. little bro.) The point is that Facebook’s “exclusivity” and “coolness” was actually a real thing at some point. It’s funny to think about that now, since Facebook is neither exclusive nor cool. I mean, seriously. And yet, what it got in exchange for becoming uncool and unexclusive is basically World Domination and 100 gillion dollarz and a David Fincher movie written by Aaron Sorkin about it that somehow becomes number one at the box office even though it’s basically a movie about BUSINESS and NERDS. Of course, it helps that it’s a GREAT movie about business and nerds, but you know what I mean.

Anyway, let’s talk about it!

After the jump, you can see the second teaser trailer for the upcoming Facebook movie, The Social Network. (And you can see the first teaser trailer here.) There is not much new in this second trailer. Mostly it is the same quotes (“Let’s sue him in Federal court!”) against a dynamic background but no actual footage or anything. And yet, I am starting to think this movie is going to be really good. Which is weird. I mean, David Fincher directed it, and he is very good at directing things. And Aaron Sorkin wrote it, and he is very good at writing things (for the most part). Jesse Eisenberg is in it, and he is good at being in things. And Rashida Jones is in it, and she is very good at marrying me. So I guess it make sense. But at the same time, it IS a movie about Facebook. And Facebook IS a boring website. And websites themselves are boring. And so you would assume snore. The Internet is not a good dramatic subject. Then again, neither is writing articles for the New Republic. Could this be OUR GENERATION’S Shattered Glass?!

Second compelling teaser trailer for Facebook: Curse Of The Black Pearl, you guys:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a bildungsroman (that’s right, I’ve been to COLLEGE) about a man named Benjamin Button whose case is very curious. He is born as an old man, and as he ages he gets younger and younger, until he turns into a baby and dies. That’s pretty much it, but imagine that it took three hours to read that sentence. Oh sure, he meets some characters along the way, I guess, and he eventually falls in love with Cate Blanchett. But mostly his life is actually pretty straight forward, it just gets kind of weird around the ends. Oh, and the whole thing is told through a journal that Benjamin Button wrote for his daughter, which she reads aloud to a dying Cate Blanchett in the hospital during a hurricane. So it’s basically The Notebook, but with a reverse-aging man-baby. Perfect.

Here is the curious case of why this movie stinks:

The fact that Hollywood is making a movie about Facebook shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise. Those dudes will make a movie about anything. I’m genuinely shocked that it’s 2009 and we still haven’t seen Doritos: The Movie. Yet. What is surprising is that Aaron Sorkin is writing it, because he is an adult, and he seems to have some talent. And what’s even more surprising is which other talented adult is in high-level talks to direct. From Variety:

Columbia Pictures is in advanced talks with David Fincher to direct “The Social Network,” the Aaron Sorkin-scripted film for Columbia Pictures about the formation of Facebook.

The film will focus on the evolution of Facebook from its 2004 creation on the Harvard campus by sophomore Mark Zuckerberg to a juggernaut with more than 200 million members.

WHAT’S IN THE GROUP?! WHAT’S IN THE GROUP, WHAT’S IN THE GROUP?!

Or:

The first rule of Facebook Club is you don’t talk about Facebook Club.

And other horribly out of date David Fincher references. “Benjamin Button has sent you a gift”? I don’t know. But David Fincher! What is this movie? No one wants this. “It’s gonna be like Shattered Glass meets Hackers meets Gordon Gecko.” No it’s not. (Admittedly, that is a quote that I just made up.)

Stop it, adults. You’re being totally bogue. DEFRIENDSTERED.
