I can’t believe it’s August 3rd. No one can. It’s going to be the #1 thing discussed around every water cooler for the rest of the week. It’s basically winter already and I’ve barely done anything remotely summery. I haven’t even tried on a romper and thought about buying it before ultimately deciding that it was not for me, and that was like my #1 summer thing that I wanted to do. You know how many times I’ve been to the beach? One, BARELY. It doesn’t even count because all we did was eat a hotdog and go to the arcade basically because it was raining. Do you have any more questions about my summer? Jeeze, pry, pry, pry. But anyway, I figure we could ALL use a bit more summer in what’s left of our stupid too-hot summer, while we sit at our computers and think about the next song we want to play on Turntable. And what’s more summery than watermelon, right? Nothing. Don’t even try to think of anything more summery than a watermelon because I’m sure you can’t do it, let’s just all watch this video together.

It’s a movie about August, 2001 and the failure of a dot-com startup that’s been out in limited release for a few weeks. It has a cameo by David Bowie that, despite what the trailer would suggest, is apparently very brief. But I am so sick of summer action movies and their constant hype that I think I’m going to go see August this weekend based on Owen Gleiberman’s Entertainment Weekly review:

Anyone who thinks that Josh Hartnett isn’t a true movie star should see his riveting, high-wire performance in August…They’ve made an indie Wall Street for the Internet era of virtual-profit hucksterism.

The 36% rating on RottenTomatoes be damned, I just want to see a movie with talking in it. People talking out of their mouths, saying words that represent ideas. I feel like I’ve been seeing only action movies and dumb comedies since I was fifteen, I’m exhausted, where is that movie? (See also: Man On Wire, which opens this weekend.)

Can a caper movie about a young start-up millionaire whose investor has lost faith in his webpage be interesting? From this trailer for August, out July 15 and starring Josh Hartnett as a young CEO of something broadband-related called “Land Shark,” it seems the answer is maybe. The stakes are pretty low (“Will he keep his fancy car?”) and it probably should have come out a few years ago, but it does star David Bowie as the investor and Rip Torn as an old guy who doesn’t understand how much money is on the internet. Web millionaires now have their own Behind The Music:

You know who will definitely see this movie? The College Humor dudes.
