Steve Jobs isn’t a person or even the type of person who is ever really talked about on Videogum. That is to say, he isn’t an actor, or an animal, or a baby, or someone who has recently had a trampoline accident. But it would seem kind of odd or off not to acknowledge his death in the standard Videogum way. (Which also generally includes a quote from a source, so here is the New York Times: )

Steven P. Jobs, the visionary co-founder of Apple who helped usher in the era of personal computers and then led a cultural transformation in the way music, movies and mobile communications were experienced in the digital age, died Wednesday. He was 56.

But it would seem odd not to acknowledge it for a lot of reasons, the least of which being that, as far as I know, Videogum (as well as close to every blog on Earth, probably) is written exclusively using products he invented. Plus a real source of contention in my relationship with Gabe is that we both have iPhones and he’s always upset that my white iPhone is cooler than his black iPhone. So it seems appropriate. A lot of people are saying some really great things about it (some of us may have been up since 7 this morning reading basically every Steve Jobs obituary on the Internet and being surprised at how much they are crying about it, I don’t know who but just some of us maybe have been doing that) so I’d like to point you in the direction of a few: Wired, Gizmodo, the New York Times from before, and this collection of quotes from New York Magazine.

R.I.P. Steve Jobs. You’re in heaven now, revolutionizing the way the angels view and use technology.

We take a momentary break from Charlie Sheen news (did you see how he threatened to chop his son’s head off and send it to his mother in the mail? LOL?) to bring you the second biggest story of the day: Apple’s release of the iPad 2. It looks pretty neat! I wasn’t really that impressed with the iPad 1, which seemed like a giant iPhone, and I guess this still seems like a giant iPhone, but at least it’s a thinner, lighter, faster, neater smaller iPhone? I don’t know. (Oh, as with all of our iPad Open Threads, if the BOSS is reading this, it is relevant to this website because uh did you know you can play movies on your new iPad with its improved graphics capabilities and also can I have an iPad strictly for work-related purposes?) The best part about the new iPad though is that it inspired a small party game on Twitter: #predictingJayLenojokes. I think this one was my favorite.

Admittedly, this barely has anything to do the Real Housewives of Dallas or videos of foxes jumping on trampolines, but it’s all anybody is talking about right now, so we might as well talk about it here. (And if the boss asks, you can watch movies and videos on this thing, just like you can watch movies and videos on the WiFi-enabled computers at the public library with the rest of the BUMS.) Personally, I have one word for the Apple iPad: UNIMPRESSED. I already have an iPhone, and it is a piece of crap. And not once in all of my time of having it did I ever wish that it was just a bunch bigger and more breakable. “You can read books on it.” You know where else I can read books? On books. Now, if the Apple iPad was $45, and the point was just that Steve Jobs felt like we deserved it, then I would be blogging a different tune. But unfortunately, my quarterly budget for fragile toys that already seem woefully obsolete is all spent, and spent well, I might add. Also:

This video (after the jump) is from June, but it started circulating this weekend when Waxy linked to it. Now, to a normal human being, this video seems fairly straight-forward. An aging hip hop artist who has traded in his street credibility and his convincingly “gangster” image for a comfortable recurring role on a mainstream police procedural (AS THE POLICE!), and who struggles, one imagines, with a life of constant compromise between the hard-fought persona of his youth that got him to where he is today, and the inevitable comfort and warm fat of moneyed celebrity, destroys a laptop with a hammer. Pretty tough! You can picture him in the breakfast nook with his porn star wife, pushing the food that their personal chef prepared for them around on the plate (“I didn’t like cantaloupe until I was in my 40s!” — Ice T) and wondering what to do with this old laptop, and Ice T decides to get his video camera because for the narcissist there is no moment not worth capturing, and so there you go.

Well, this is terrifying. So, I guess the new iPhone has a video camera on it? I wouldn’t know, I have an OLD iPhone. Boo hoo. These guys know what I’m talking about. Anyway, now that the new iPhones have a video camera, all of these developers are making these visual-tracking programs, which they are calling “Augmented Reality Apps,” codename: SKYNET. So, there’s one where you can see people’s Twitter updates in geographical relationship to yourself, and there’s one that shows you the nearest subway stop. It all seems very neat, very Minority Report, and VERY useless.

But this new Augmented Reality Skynet Lawnmower Man app has to be the most disconcerting one yet. When you point your video camera iPhone at someone (also, stop doing that, SHOW OFF) it will allow you to instantly access their on-line social media profiles.

In Microsoft’s defense, it was pretty ballsy or whatever to actually describe their competitor’s product as “sexy” in one of their own commercials.
