Some background: during last week’s borderline-governmental-shutting-down-grade budgetary fight, Senator John Kyl (R-AZ) took to the Senate floor and argued that abortion constituted “90 percent of what Planned Parenthood is about” in an effort to strip Planned Parenthood of federal funding. In fact, abortion constitutes just 3% of “what Planned Parenthood is about,” the rest being primarily family planning and other important services to low income families. When asked about this discrepancy, John Kyl’s office responded “this was not intended to be a factual statement.” HOLY MOLY! I mean, I knew that politics was mostly over-priced rhetoric in a Men’s Warehouse suit and backroom deals intended to destroy blacks and Jews, but good GRIEF! THIS IS THE UNITED STATES SENATE! The most powerful legislative body in one of the most powerful countries on Earth. You can just say shit? Like, whatever? What is this: A BLOG?! Anyway, another person noticed that this seems mildly inappropriate and ridiculous–to say the least–and that person’s name is Stephen Colbert, who created this week’s game on Twitter with the hashtag: #NotIntendedToBeAFactualStatement. This Is Just A Very Good Speech About Abortion Funding

After the jump, I have posted a speech from New York’s 9th District Representative, Anthony Weiner, a democrat, expounding upon a Republican-sponsored bill that would redefine the definition of rape in order to curtail government funding of abortion, and I’m not really sure how to describe the speech other than “very good,” which admittedly sounds weird when you are talking about a speech about “abortion funding.” Perhaps “very thoughtful” and “pretty forceful” and “intellectually annihilating if you are in a certain segment of the population that uses a particularly complicated form of rhetorical distraction to combine your excessively stringent social values with your supposedly free-wheeling political philosophy.” Is that better? Also, let me say this: for a lot of years I have believed that the abortion issue was “complicated,” which Anthony Weiner reiterates in this “very good” and also “those other things I said” speech, but the more I think about it, the less complicated it gets. In fact, it seems pretty uncomplicated. It is called MIND YOUR OWN FUCKING BUSINESS. (It should also not surprise you that I am PRO assisted suicide. And also pro gay-rights. And also pro anything where people get to decide how they would like to live their lives because that is a hard enough endeavor even with all of the options being made available to you.)

A 12-Year Old Lectures Us About Abortion

Is this for school? What school is this for? YIKES HIGH? Look, it’s not fair for an adult to pick apart the logic of a child’s argument, because the adult has a smart adult brain and the child has a stupid child brain, but it is fair for an adult to give a child a pro-tip, and my pro-tip is this: if you are 12 years old and you are going to give a really arrogant and condescending lecture about a complicated issue that you clearly have absolutely zero capacity to even understand much less have moral clarity about and much much less have something to teach other people in regards to, and if you are going to deliver that arrogant and condescending lecture in a manner that suggests that you are (or would like to be perceived as) somehow older and wiser than your years–even though you are clearly not older or wiser than anything, you are 12–even if that issue is benign and not such a tendentious and personal and emotional one as abortion, but especially if it IS such a tendentious and personal and emotional issue as abortion, then please, for your own sake, LEAVE ICE CREAM OUT OF IT. Nothing says “ignore every word that comes out of my unformed baby mouth” like comparing things to ice cream. Adults don’t do that. Rookie mistake.You’re welcome, 12 year olds. Good luck trying to be taken seriously, I know it’s hard, and you are never making it any easier. (Thanks for the tip, Seth.)
