A lot of times this is the blame of the interviewer. What did the interviewer do to bring out the funny? He is in control of the situation. Patton is not going to just riff on his own and take over the interview, that would be rude. But really, who cares. It is an interview, meant to convey information. When Patton wants to be funny he IS funny. Listen to any of his appearances on The Best Show on WFMU, for example.
