Yeah, this movie isn’t so bad. It’s unconventional and takes a few liberties with its characters/science, but it’s also admirable with its go-for-it attitude. I think it fits pretty nicely into the tradition of the older Cronenberg movies, which were all a bit schlocky, but also posed a lot of interesting questions. I especially liked that it’s not all just one note. Aside from the horror elements, there’s also a lot of great, dark humor to be found here.
I haven’t even seen this show yet, so please don’t mistake this comment for a defense.
… but regarding the whole Indian-food-leads-to-diarrhea issue… There’s one major difference between the Indian food you eat in Wisconsin and the food you eat in India. In India, it’s prepared with water from India, which commonly contains a number of bacteria that North American stomachs aren’t prepared for. And yes, this can lead to diarrhea… Lots of it, I’m told by people who travel more than I do.
So yes, Indian food is delicious, we all agree — but there’s more to this “joke” than just saying, “Hey, Indian food is weird, therefore also hilarious,” because we all know that’s bullshit, but it honestly truly does lead to stomach problems for a lot of travellers, even if its no fault of the cuisine or the people preparing it.
I think Gabe’s reset button is broken.
Not to be all Professor Konami Code over here, but referencing the Konami Code incorrectly is a punishable nerd offense.
He seems genuinely pissed, but secretly I kind of hope they make a recurring “Ginger Kid” character just to taunt him some more. I don’t think he’ll ever really understand how tv shows work though, so maybe it would be pointless.
Indeed, that’s pretty much what a banana leaf looks like: bright green and kinda shiny. They’re also really big, so what Miles is holding would only be a small piece of one.
The only odd thing about it is that the edges seem very neatly cut.
And then what? The principal can still just say “no” to writing the letter because even if Ben exposes him, Alex still gets fucked over with no letter. In the end, that was more important to Ben than the job and he realized that the whole blackmailing thing wasn’t going to work out.
I made it through the whole thing. What do I win?
Exactly. Not funny, but hardly a “retard joke” either. Again, they actually treat her much like any other character.
For what it’s worth, they didn’t specifically “make fun” of her. In fact, the outcome of the episode was Chris coming to the realization that Down Syndrome should not affect how we judge a person, since he learned she was also a total jerk — a character trait that can afflict people regardless of DS.
But yeah, a pretty crappy episode.
It looks stupid, but at least it seems to be somewhat faithful to the spirit of the show… Which was also kinda stupid.

Must be a matter of interpretation. That shot where Sarah Polley’s character walks in on them having sex seemed to obviously be aiming for a squirmy, uncomfortable laugh — there’s no doubt in my mind the director knew exactly what the audience would be thinking, and it’s pretty much the exact same thing going through her character’s head: “This is fucked up — what the hell is going on?”
