I 100% agree with this but it seems like biting the hand that feeds given that the comment culture here is a giffy slumber party

Were any of them drawn to the ivory tower by

The problem is that they don’t get people jazzed about learning. They get people jazzed about jazz. It’s marzipan in the shape of a vegetable.

Malcolm Gladwell is a perfect example of this phenomenon. He is a shit man

So I’m fine with there being a place for a guy who is a born TV entertainer and happens to have a PhD. That for sure makes sense. But if we actually care about being brought up to science’s level and not science being brought down to ours, I don’t think an entertainer is the right person.

I think even the concept of a “face of science” is problematic, but I’ll throw out David Griffiths. His physics textbooks are probably the most widely used in advanced undergraduate coursework. Also, there’s like 5 new science nobel laureates every year and nobody books those guys on leno.

I think the whole NDT worship thing is dumb and bad! I think it’s this weird fetishization of science the same way people do with like, martial arts and bacon. NDT comes out on stage and he blows your mind by saying “the universe… is inside out!” and then they stuff him back in a bag and tony hawk comes out and does a 1080.

NDT is not an active scientist. He wasnt an important scientist when he was active. There are active, important scientists out there, if we actually valued science and knowledge we would be listening to those guys, like Nima Arkani-Hamed and Juan Maldacena and Ed Witten. Not to mention all the many brilliant people who work on things besides high energy particle theory.

Having NDT be the face of science is like having detlef schrempf be the face of basketball

Yeah, if the idea that 48% of the country votes for a candidate who wants to give you ECT to get rid of your urge to kiss boys depresses you, take solace in the fact that their hatred is buried firmly in their hearts and isn’t going anywhere.

That’s mostly to play to the audience here. In the right circumstances you could get to me admit that I think the kid knows his way around a joke, but he has a serious audience problem.

So I guess “glass stones” re: cruelty and humiliation and also kind of boring to hear about now re: you don’t like the guy

“whose show is based on mockery and humiliation”

Wow! Videogum mocks hell of people hell of the time! And guess what? Not such a big deal, nobody’s dog is getting killed and everyone should own a pair of big boy pants. Not the worst to make fun of someone singing creepy karaoke in the dark.

But here’s the thing: that kind of mockery is pretty easy to do with the internet. What’s hard (very hard, actually) is to take a 14 second dumb clip of someone falling over and find that person and put them on camera and present them as a real person who just happened to have a bad moment on film and let them be part of some jokes that aren’t at their expense, and then also make this new humanizing portrayal of them be seen by nearly as many people as originally saw them fucking up! Which, guess what, is exactly what fuckin Daniel Tosh does pretty routinely with his web redemption thing.

The guy seems like an asshole and I could not be more tired of people defending their right to make bad, insensitive jokes about rape and I don’t watch or like his show anymore, but VG tries to get way too much mileage out of hating on a guy who sometimes does something genuinely kind for the people we laugh at on youtube.

Except! Except! It’s much more difficult and worthwhile to give a meaningful defense of something that maybe has a couple warts than it is to find imperfections and gripe about them! Gabe you are basically arguing for your right to complain about Megan Fox’s toethumbs. Fanboyism suxx, but being 2 cool 4 film skool is also real shitty.

NG’s twitting has already been pretty popular for a while now? and a much bigger website wrote about it yesterday? so this is not the kind “unique find” that I feel entitled to because I own a computer?

This is probably an opinion that is going to “come off a certain way” but Mindy Kaling is a mediocre talent who is fantastically self-absorbed (but self-deprecating about how self-absorbed she is sometimes! so maybe it doesn’t count? tee hee?). She is exactly what went wrong with The Office after Schur & Daniels left. She is one more rung on the success ladder away from being Ricky Gervais pt. II.

None of that has anything to do with her being FEMALE, but it IS frustrating that an industry so stingy about giving opportunities to women has showered her with riches while other extremely funny women scrap for like one set on Premium Blend.

It’s sad to see something once good end as something not just bad but anathema to the good thing it once was. Oh well, looking forward 2 M. Kaling taking over Parks & Rec, more cupcake plots! More jolkes! More scarves!
