My sister swears we weren’t allowed to watch Roseanne growing up, but since I can practically recite half of the episodes, I must have sneaked it on syndication as soon as I was old enough to be a rebellious brat. It’s such an amazing show! Not-typical looking women getting to be real and funny and smart and sexy and all sorts of other normal things! We girls of the late 80s to mid 90s were so spoiled, what with our Julia Sugarbakers and Golden Girls and Roseannes. I can’t imagine being a young girl now and not having so many “mouthy” women to idolize.
In other amazingly well-written shows that depict very real family dynamics and have great female characters news: Friday Night Lights is also streaming on Netflix instant!
Yeah, didn’t realize that the horrible depiction of women in most Judd Apatow movies was even up for discussion. Almost every character is portrayed as Mommy Taking Care of Grown Man Baby or Humorless Bitch or Hot Drunk/Slutty Girl Played For A Gag or a combination thereof. You can think those movies are funny and still think that the portrayal of women is screwed up.

Looks like they made a stop in Athens on the way in…

I don’t really understand your earlier tactics, but I’m glad at least that someone will say “hello, all southerners aren’t racist.” Yes, there is a “Southern Strategy”, but trying to quantify the amount of “racist” that can be applied to each state of the union is pointless, and only serves to minimize the rascism and bigotry that goes on in other parts of the country. Yes, Southerners say and do terribly racist things. But so does Arizona. And I’m guessing so does Alaska, New York and Missouri, as they have produced Sarah Palin, Bill O’Reilly and Rush effing Limbaugh. It’s really lazy to make easy southern=racist jokes, it’s a lot harder to confront what happens in your community every day.
Seriously. This is awful.
Absolutely my favorite part of the episode. More accents please!
Agreed.
The McCain Mutiny

Yeah, I was thinking something similar. Maybe it turns out he’d found out he had AIDS in the mid-90s, but continued to have unprotected sex with hundreds of women, most of whom are now infected. He goes to trial but is acquited (sex crimes don’t lead to jail time, silly), and one of the distraught victims shoots him outside of the courthouse. I need to stop watching SVU.
