There are few things better than the nerdy genius prolifically churning out songs in obscurity, led by the muse of a familiar heavy metal band but sending it through a fun house crazy prism. This was the appeal of Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices (trying and trying to make another “Don’t Fear the Reaper”) and it’s the appeal of Mark Gormley, whose goal in “Without You” is late-70s-era Iron Maiden.
