This is a little NY-centric, but not really: the state voted down gay marriage today, 38-24, which is a local disappointment boulder to add to the global Disappointment Mountain. But State Senator Diane Savino gave a pretty good speech in defense of gay marriage, and it is worth your time!

  1. Seriousgum strikes again! Balk is right, Savino’s speech “…is deeply powerful, completely rational, and utterly correct.”

Why does America want Sex And The City: 2 Fast 2 Furious, but they don’t want fairness under the law?

If I were gay, I would feel even worse today!

    • I said “they”. I’m a ‘Merican too. The majorities and the representations of our country’s desire for equality are too unpredictable for me to expect the change to happen as fast as I thought it could.

At least we still have New Hampshire to be proud of this year. That’s at least one more disappointment boulder rolling down the hill into a grassy field where it can eventually become an overgrown mound of pride.

  2. Nice speech. And, um, nice rack.

  3. equality is not limited to any state. thanks for linking to this video.

  4. I’m bummed about this ruling too, but that was a wonderful speech.

  5. It would be nice if, in America, we didn’t put human rights up to a vote.

  6. i’m not gay-married, but my husband is!

get it? no? yeah, it makes no sense. just like the lack of rights up in this joint!

phew. i think i saved it.

  7. I was very moved by her speech, it was totally worth my time and helped eat up 7 minutes from my productivity-less last hour at work. On a side note, I interned at the Texas Senate during college. NONE of the senators were as eloquent or passionate (or attractive) as Sen. Savino in regard to ANY issue.

  8. Another reason why I love Canada.
    This was an amzing speech.

  9. That was a very good speech. I wished I could be standing next to her supplying her with high fives and fist bumps and a couple hugs after every powerful point she made and every great example she provided to back it all up.

  10. Ugh. I don’t get it. Everyone’s always trumpeting “equal rights!” “equal rights!” but almost everytime this issue is brought up, there is an overwhelming opposition. Those who trumpet and oppose either don’t see the gay/lesbian community as equals, or they’re hypocrites. (Both.)

    Checkyourselvesgum, America.

  11. Yay to the speech. Boo to the vote. Yay to Sen. Savino. Boo to NYCentricity. First the pizza party, now this! The flyover states are not happy.

  12. i posted this video on facebook (stealgum.com?) and a friend of mine just left me a message that (518) 455-2437 is Sen. Savino’s office # in Albany if you want to leave a message of thanks.

    • update–I just called and i actually got a person not a voicemail, awkward! i had no idea what to say, but i pulled through. the guy was very nice. and after that shock, i feel like i can overcome my social anxiety and attend the videogum pizza party.

      • I work for a senator (in a different state) and we are always happy to receive thank you calls. It’s a welcome respite from irate callers that rip me a new one for a decision that I had absolutely nothing to do with, other than working here and happening to be the one who answered the phone call. Props to you for just calling to say thanks, even if you felt awkward and put on the spot!!

  13. Sometimes I just get sick of all the bigots around. Especially when they’ve been elected to represent me, and still vote on the side of intolerance.

    • Do you live in the south? I know there’s no monopoly on bigots down here, but I am sick to death that my elected representatives consistently vote against equal rights for all under the law, consistently demonize the tragedy of abortion rather than deal with the issue of unwanted pregnancy, and consistently prevent progress in stem-cell research that could produce a cure for my diabetes and my sister’s retinitis pigmentosa, and countless other chronic and debilitating ailments. Nothing makes me feel more powerless than being a liberal in the bible belt.

      • Preach it! I grew up in a smaller town in Alabama, and now live in Birmingham, but my family is one of a handful of liberal families in my hometown. Even our Democratic leaders tend to vote conservatively. Sometimes I want to stay and make things better, but others I just want to escape.

      • Actually, I like in New York, and I’m pretty sure my state senator voted against it.

  14. Woot, Gabe. Woot.

  15. i was sincerely moved by this heartfelt and eloquent speech and thanks to rb because i will call the senator with a message of thanks. with so many enemies of progress it’s a powerful motivator to see courage and windom like this.

however, and this is definitely too ny-centric, but you can’t make a left turn on 52nd street from 6th avenue. one-way streets! senator savino, ya burnt?

  16. Wait a sec. I thought you guys we’re all “marriage is soooo dum” and “ew! gross! marriage.” And one of you was all, “Marriage? BARF!” Wut up?

  17. Awesome Speech, Great Job!
This woman is great. How can you argue against this??

  18. Man, I am genuinely surprised by the results of this vote. I mean… cha… huh? How is this even a question anymore? America? Rights. Right for some and not for all? Not cool. Case closed.

  19. amazing speech with a concise argument whether you are for or against. #sincerity

also PROUD DAY FOR STATEN ISLAND and how often can we say that? #snark
