  1. Well, going crazy? It’s a lot money, but this kind of consolidation is pretty typical of capitalism in the last hundred years or so. So speaking in strictly economic terms it’s a ho-hum merger, even if unexpected. Marvel & DC are huge corporate entities in their own rights and not mom-and-pop comic companies like they were in, say, the early ’40s. Is this consolidation bad for fans of Marvel? Probably not, as Disney owns a lot of adult-themed properties and milks them for money without completely Disney-fying them.

Still, for those of us opposed to capitalism or even just complete consolidation of industry, it’s bad. Plus, many of us are also adamantly anti-Disney so this stinks. I really don’t want to see Wolverine in a cartoon with Mickey Mouse unless he’s gutting him with his claws.

  2. This might be worse then the time marvel announced Spiderman 4 and 5 were in production.

  3. I wonder if that gives Disney a cut of the Universal Studios Theme Parks revenue because of the Marvel-based attractions.

    (too obvious?)

The next Iron Man 2 trailer is going to feature Iron Man and Wall-E fighting Mickey Rourke and Jafar.

  7. Hugh Jackman just peed his pants.

  8. Eh, I don’t see much negative coming of this.

DC has been owned by Time/Warner for years and the only bad things that have come of it are occasional editorial changes (which would’ve been made regardless, since they’re usually about preserving the brand image of characters and all that) and slow-going as far as film adaptations are concerned. However, we’ve also gotten Batman: The Animated Series and several other top quality Bruce Timm animated series from Warner Bros. and any oversight clearly hasn’t prevented them from publishing some of the most intelligent and interesting comics of the last twenty years through Vertigo. (While Marvel currently only uses their “mature readers” line for gratuitous violence and tits) Marvel also now has the same corporate safety net that DC has, invaluable in an increasingly unprofitable industry.

    • You’re absolutely right. I see this as a plus for Marvel Comics fans. Besides, with this extra revenue and security being provided from Disney I can see Marvel taking more creative chances and focusing on more original IP’s. Besides, I’m sure Disney is more interested in Film/TV deals when it comes to the Marvel Universe. But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what comes of this.

  9. Disney Oligarhy, people.

  10. I feel silly asking, but what does the acronym C.R.E.A.M. stand for?

  11. I just hope it doesn’t push back the filming of any thing. Especially the Avengers.

I’m not sure if it will have any effect on content but I’m guessing no. According to NPR it’s because Disney is trying to get on the male market that is in to Marvel. I doubt they would alienate the market they’re trying to court.

  13. c’mon rick.

  14. 4 billion dollars sounds lame in the context of a page in a Marvel comic book, but evil and terrifying in the Disney context. Context madness!
