Roger Ebert addresses the haters (of his Transformers 2 review). And as the old saying goes: when you wrestle with the devil, you’re gonna get wet with fire.

  1. ebert-haters are DRENCHED in fire after that reaming.
he basically called them unevolved, joe sixpacks… which is why i love roger ebert.
he’s the progenitor of this snark shit.

I thought he did it pretty politely. Stay classy, Mr. Ebert.

  3. HEY not all of us are lucky enough to get into GOOD COLLEGES Ebert. I thought Transformers 2 was shit, but I’m not backhandedly insulting EVERYONE WHO THINKS IT RAWKED. He tries to counter them calling him an elitist, but at the END HE JUST SOUNDS like a SMUG ASSHOLE.

I don’t GET IT. Is that on PURPOSE?!

    • Show a little forbearance for Roger’s rhetorical shortcomings. Not everyone can express themselves with your charm and grace.

    • I see what you are saying. He spends an awfully long time defending elitism before posturing himself in both defiance and acceptance of it.

He at least acknowledges his positive review of the first movie, although he fails to elucidate why this one fails where the other succeeds. That wouldn’t be important, except that in the respective reviews, he seems to be praising one and damning the other for the same elements.

Ultimately, I can understand his point about the limitations of subjective opinion as a defense against bad judgment, but it still seems like his review of the first film is a strong counterpoint.

  4. Roger EBEST. (Sorry, but it’s true).

  5. Roger EBEST! (Sorry.) (But it’s true!)

  6. Ha! I appreciate his smartass choice of pictures. The Thinker next to Michael Bay. Get on with your bad self, Roger!

This was great. I also like how he acknowledged the “reading too much into it” insult that gets hurled around. I hate being in conversations with people who love some piece of shit movie, and their reasoning is “OMG! But Vin Diesel totally flipped that car twice!!”

Really? Never mind the fact that the story was non-existent, and there were no characters, or that the “comedy” wasn’t funny, nor the “action” not at all active. It was cool because some cars crashed, and Vin Diesel said something meatheaded afterward.

Sorry, if that makes me an elitist, then I’m PROUDLY an elitist.

  8. Where’s all the love for Southern Elitists?

  9. “Are these people wrong? Yes. They are wrong.” <3

  10. I knew Videogum was for me the first time Gabe wrote about Roger Ebert being the best. Thanks for letting others in on his bestness!
