Youth in Revolt poster, you guys. It is weird to think of how I read this book more than 15 years ago. Nice timing, Hollywood. You’ve really got your finger on the pulse of America’s adults who used to be America’s youth. When this comes out in theaters I’m going to put on my Dinosaur Jr. t-shirt and go sleep out on the sidewalk for three days to buy tickets in an homage to the internet not existing and my having a bad sense of proportionately worthwhile ways to spend my time. Get it? I’m 100 years old.
But also, Michael Cera sure looks like Michael Cera on this poster. Complete with what America’s hair stylists are calling “the Cera,” and a thrift-store-looking simple-red-and-white-striped shirt. Although, doesn’t Nick Twisp have a lot of sex in YIR? I feel like he kind of has a lot of sex. It’s hard for me to remember because my long-term and short-term memory have both been in decline for the better part of three decades now. Also I can tell when it is going to rain, and I’m so tired of going to funerals.
The point is that eventually it’s going to be time for Michael Cera to stop being so Michael Cera-y, isn’t it? I mean, for his sake! He’s great. I just don’t want America to get tired of him playing too-clever-by-half asexual boy-children. Is this the project where that’s going to happen for him? It doesn’t look like it. But maybe it is! It’s so hard to write a comprehensive movie review based off of a movie poster! I give this film three Tony Hawks. Cowabunga!

it actually will be kinda a change. i remember the main character being really duplicitous and calculating (so that he could get into that sweet, sweet indian vagina) which are not characteristics we’ve really seen cera play, unless you count him trying to trick maeby into making out with him which wasn’t really the same thing. this movie may be to him, what ‘poison ivy II: lily’ was to alyssa milano.

i really genuinely want to see this kid in a Beck Hansen biopic–just covering the greyhound across america -> antifolk leafblowing -> loser composing -> Thurston Moore shoethrow on 120 minutes eras. TMoore could play himself and there could be scientology easter eggs through the whole thing. i would pay retail for that movie.

He just needs to play the character one more time for the AD movie, then it can be retired forever.
As much as I loved George Michael, I have to say fuck Michael Cera. His arrogance and better-than-you self righteousness over not wanting to take part in the AD movie is mindblowing. I would think an actor with zero range who catapults to stardom thanks to a gem of a project like AD would be more grateful.
Sorry for the rant. My point is I had hoped they would forge ahead with the AD movie without Cera. Let’s face it- the inside jokes about Cera being a holdout ingrate would be more funny than the usual george michael schtick.

As for YIR, the cure for wanting to read or watch movies about precocious, hyper-literate 14 year olds is to be around real-life 14 year olds.

whatevs, i saw a test screening of this like 4 months ago. michael cera was super michael cera in it but thats a good thing. and the movie was rad although yes, i read the book yearrrrs ago.

i read the book a couple months ago, it will definitely be interesting to see how they portray it. nick twisp (the protagonist) is borderline crazy in the fact that he has multiple personality disorder and what appears to be a sex addiction. i really, really hope this is R and not a version of Youth in Revolt that would be a kid’s movie, as even though the book features a 14 year old, the subject matter should definitely warrant it an R rating.

I saw this movie 3 weeks ago at a screening. If you enjoyed the books as I did, you probably won’t enjoy the movie. They Michael Cera’d Nick Twisp, he’s not nearly as devious as he was in the book, and after the first 1/3 of the movie the plot veers tragically away from the book.
