Look, there are plenty of absurd things to make fun of on both the left and the right, which is why The Daily Show itself, which is commonly assumed to have a left wing bias, doesn’t let democrats off the hook for their silliness, either. But as any nine year old with a video camera knows, news parodies are much, much harder than they look, and this week they get to look even more excruciatingly impossible with the advent of the twice-weekly podcast Newsbusted, “Fake news from the right,” by the conservative site Breitbart. And like the other sad attempts at conservative news parody before it, it’s Bush league. Don’t worry about spitting your Obama Kool Aid all over the computer screen. It’s safe.

Please note that this show’s YouTube page instructs the user to “read the disclaimer” and realize that “the laugh track is part of the joke.” Ahh, of course, the disclaimer! It wouldn’t be a Conservative parody show without one. They might want to add “Not suitable for anyone with a sense of humor.”

  1. I think I’m quoting Gabe: We’re going to need a bigger Ugh.

  2. yow. guys, your lead joke was … a straight-up fact. and the less said about 1:35, the better.

  3. They ended it with a Brittany Spears joke. Wow.

  4. It’s pretty hard to find a conservative funnier than Michelle Bachman.

  5. I like how she’s taking time to pause and acknowledge the fake audience’s appreciation of the non-joke.

  6. You know what’s hilarious? Shouting. (Because the boom/lapel mike wasn’t working?) Also hilarious: Filming a parody news show behind your kitchen’s bar-style counter.

  7. Two things that are equally disturbing: 1) There are people across this great country who would let out a guffaw to some of those…um…jokes. 2) Jay Leno has just moved up a notch in my book. He is now the second worst.

  8. we’re gonna need a bigger YIKES.

  9. You catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar, but more flies with vinegar than this…

  10. All I see is Kristen Wiig in character as Elizabeth Hasselbeck trying to convince herself that in fact this is funny.

  11. Those teleprompter jokes never get old, do they?

  12. That self satisfied smirk at 1:57 is extremely unwarranted. Also, she seems mildly drunk: weird enunciation and a few slurs. Whoops. That’s your fake Conservative newsbuster.

    • “Evenhandedness” is for journalists, not comedians.

      • Evenhandedness just shows that you have the confidence in your opinion to actually address the arguments of the other side. Stewart is a comedian sure but he forgets that and goes full on “fuck you Cramer/Santorelli/Scarborough/whoever!” and forgets to actually tell jokes. I still like Daily Show but I watch it more for John Oliver and the gang than Stewart now.

I disagree with all of my favorite comedians politically (Cross/Oswalt/CK/Galifianakis) but so what. If they tell a good joke I laugh even if I disagree with the political point. But “Bush is an asshole” just isn’t a joke. Setting up straw men just isn’t as funny as making your point with a joke the way Colbert does.

        • Would saying “Bush is an asshole” in a funny accent make it a joke?

          • Sure if it’s a punch line to an actual joke. It’s doesn’t take any kind of wit to just insult someone. Norm MacDonald could pull it off. He used to make “OJ is a murderer” and “Michael Jackoson is a child molester” hilarious. But he set it up, cuz he’s a good comedian. Stewart is funny, he can do better than the no brainer cheap shots.

        • i am probably a damned communist compared to you, but you and i agree on TDS vs, colbert–and i don’t relate to the troops at all!! i’d have to say i support the plumbers and HVAC workers in their work ideologically and financially, on occasion, but until the US gets invaded, i can never side with the troops.

that being said, the video was about as funny as your average post-fey weekend update: meh-tastic.

    • Pcbower (…sir) a single up vote won’t do much so I’m gonna go out there and say it. This guys saying some good criticisms! Like, stop knee jerk down voting what you think is knee jerk conservatism. Guys!

Stewart definitely doesn’t have the finesse of Colbert. And what Colbert said about don’t ask don’t tell was real-talk that I wouldn’t be surprised if it made some folk reflect on the issue for a minute. While Stewart is still relatively funny, he’s mostly embraced the label the Fox pundits have given him now and a fair amount of his show is just him responding to why they shouldn’t even be caring about a fake news program. But yeah, Colbert = real-talk.

  15. you guys just DONT GET THE JOKE duh. she is clearly channeling norm.

  16. colbert has the incredible challenge of making his (liberal) points from the vantage of a (conservative) fool. i think the constraints of his character impose a degree of self sensorship ensuring his logical credibility. the arguments are ultimately made in the viewers minds, and yes it is possible to force an oppinion indirectly, (montage), but there are usually at least elements of real dialogue with colbert.

  17. Wait wait wait wait, that NBA joke is just straight up racist! Come on Videogum, I hate to start my day with reminders of how scarily and unapologetically racist right-wing America is!

    • As a sports fan, I was most annoyed that she said ‘play for the NBA’.

You play IN a league and FOR a team. Geez.

And as a sports fan, I watched this news broadcast like I would any other; half listening to the ‘news’ and then listening attentively to the sports report.

  18. The NBA joke made me involuntarily make the sound Toad makes in Mario Party when you don’t have enough money to buy a star.

  19. arthur great  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2009

It must be hard to be a bigot AND funny. In fact, the only thing harder is Barney Frank at a Jonas Brothers concert!

    Badda-bing, am I right!?!?!?

    Newsbusted, if you’re reading, I’m without a job/conscience.

  20. The Britney Spears joke is the most upsetting of all. Seriously, that joke was straight ‘this girl’s a bad mother and probably a redneck whore’ + knowing smirk. Conservative news parody, you have sullied your name!

Hahaha, is that what they teach you about the First Amendment in pro-life-cutie school? You are adorable.

        • Pro-life cutie’s right: I worked for one day in my life and I suddenly became a right-wing fanatic who wanted to censor any TV show that I disagreed with. You no good fucking fuck-fucks.

        • Andtheycan'tspelleither  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2009

          Hipster fail. (Natch.)

        • rebecca  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2009

Cutie, why so angry? I am worried you will do something rash, like shoot some Jews (hipster Jews!) or doctors (hipster doctors!). Of course, then Hannity will just blame it on the Angry Left, obvs.

    • Hey, I know this American Patriot who might be your boyfriend…

    • Is this your attempt at winning the most thumbed-down comment of the week?

    • jimmy j  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2009

of course we have real jobs. that’s why we spend all day all on videogum. because that’s what you do when you have a real job, because real jobs are boring. videogum, like free office coffee and the smoke break, makes work bearable.

    • UNFUNNY JOKES ARE UNFUNNY asshole. Seriously, shit. Why is it that conservative comedy = lazy? WE CAN BE FUNNY too; one of us just needs to get off our asses, throw this trash out, and prove it.

Also, kudos NEWSBUSTED (I can’t believe that’s your fucking name, it doesn’t even make sense) on the racist NBA joke. I bet you were up all night thinking of dickhole ways of saying that. AND WHY THE FUCK IS SHE MOVING SO WEIRD. Bitch be creepin me out.

    • You move here from ONTD?

  22. “and anyone who doesn’t agree with me has never worked a day in his or her life.”

Actually, I work many hours a day. And when I’m not here, another physician takes over. We’re a 24 hour clinic. We’re making great numbers!

    Dr. Johnson
    Funtime Abortion Clinic
We Bring Out the Kid In You

  23. Anybody ever seen that guy Breitbart and his right-wing sites? They’re far more hilarious than this video…unintentionally so, of course. That is, when they’re not being absolutely frightening: their comments sections are filled up to their balls with pro life cuties, only far scarier.

  24. Did she call General Motors Genital Motors? I’m pretty sure she did.

  25. She keeps moving around, like her body is going through meth withdrawals.

  26. Worst anchor ever. Every comment begins with her head tilting backwards and then slowly drifting forwards again.

And please stop with the eyebrows. And the shouting. And the worst.

  27. Andthey'reunoriginal  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2009

Also, the theme is a rip off of “Turn a Sqaure” by the Shins.

  28. genital motors.

  29. pteranodon  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2009

my heart tells me these jokes aren’t funny, but there’s all that laughter! they must be funny, right?

  30. “Themaswella(? That’s what I heard, at least) prosecuters have charged a local broadcast company with financial misconduct after they ran a program critical of the government.

Or, as Democrats in this country call it, ‘the Fairness Doctrine’”

That’s what we’re calling programs critical of the government now? It’s so hard to keep up with PC speak.

Also, it’s a good thing she clarified “democrats in this country”, because the Albanian Democratic Party is also well known for pushing the fairness doctrine, so that joke could have been really confusing.

The great thing about doing political humour is that you can always deflect any criticisms of it by getting into contentious political discussions:

“What’s that? Our hostess mumbles and fidgets like she doesn’t want to be there? Well, how can you ignore the obvious left-wing bias of the American media?”

  31. Elizabeth  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2009

What’s Obama Kool Aid? Will it increase my leftie cred?

  32. This needs to get off the internet.

  33. This happens while David Letterman is apologizing to Sarah Palin for what? Making jokes? Something feels very weird here. I’m drunk, but I still hate this. Which disproves my hypothesis.

    • Yeah except Letterman’s jokes didn’t make any sense. “Man that sucked when her kid was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.” Uh, what? Her 14 year old daughter? How is that funny? WAIT how does that even make sense? It’s not like her damn kids are known to be fuckin around! One daughter had one baby; she isn’t pullin a Paris Hilton. HOW IS THIS A JOKE?!

It was just awful and in poor taste. And dumb as hell. A rare miss Dave.

  34. She’s just so fucking SMUG.

  35. Scott  |   Posted on Jun 17th, 2009

I’d honestly like to see to see this material done again, but with someone that actually knows how to do it. The material is actually not bad, but the delivery is awful!

  36. Tilt your shoulders as if bracing to get started: Let’s Get Started.

  37. anonymous  |   Posted on Jul 12th, 2009

The funniest joke I’ve ever heard that continues to make me laugh hysterically is anytime someone in the media tries to say they aren’t liberal or left-wing-biased or in the tank for Obama! That one gets me everytime, even if it deeply insults my intelligence…as if I don’t have eyes or ears.
