The UK’s National Health Service has a new PSA that attempts to combat the apparent scourge of binge drinking by showing behaviors associated with drunkenness and how silly they are and how nobody would ever do such silly things while sober. A country’s Public Service Announcements are a totally arbitrary, yet totally fascinating way to characterize an entire group of people, so this is fun. I had no idea the UK had such a huge problem with drunken people using traffic cones to shout insults to strangers.

The US, of course, has its fair share of shockingly necessary PSAs (“Never shake a baby, for example), but what’s funniest about this one is that, like New Zealand’s anti-binge drinking baby-swinging PSA, it doesn’t seem to be particularly aimed at young people! (Via AdRants.)

Why Being Sleepy and Drunk Is Great for Creativity
Here’s a brain teaser: Your task is to move a single line so that the false arithmetic statement below becomes true. IV = III + III Did you get it? In this case, the solution is rather obvious – you should move the first “I” to the right side of ...

  1. Uh. I thought almost everything he did was hysterical and I would like to have a drunk friend exactly like that.

Russel Brand’s new haircut is funny looking.

  3. That PSA is pretty funny, but seriously England, when I have to avoid stepping in fresh vomit at 9pm on a Tuesday you’ve got a problem. Put down the Magner’s and get some help.

  4. So, the next time you are drunk and you want to do something stupid, as yourself this one simple question, “Would you do this if you were sober?”

This should solve all of our problems.

  5. The british exchange student in college once went on a rampage upending picnic tables and trashcans. This sounds pretty mild but at a hippie school, this is quite offensive.
Plus he was obsessed with the idea of forcing other men to drink his urine.

  6. Barelling down a parking lot in a shopping cart screaming “YOU LOVE IT” is frighteningly accurate to my drunken life. And if you remove the garbage can through a window bit, and replace the “Ole ole ole” song with “Can’t Tell Me Nothin’” then this commercial is almost a documentary.

  7. you can get to know him ;)

I used to work at a club in a provincial English town, and yeah, this happens every single night.

    • I grew up in a very similar town to this in England and confirm and can confirm this behaviour is pretty accurate apart from the sick in the hair thing, which is mainly just rugby fans.

  9. Um, this weekend my friends and I are getting UK drunk!

  10. Actually “Yobbish” behaviour is a problem….though this PSA just made me miss England and makes me want to plan another visit.

  11. I don’t recall licensing this footage of my boyfriend.

At first I thought this reminded me so much of the year I lived in England simply because yeah, this is what every night out was like. Then I noticed the familiar layout of shops and the market stalls and finally I noticed the three fish logo on the ground – that’s the exact borough of London I lived in. Spooky.

  13. The place in the video is Kingston just outside London. I go there to buy my trousers.

  14. If the point of this video was to show me that I’m not nearly enough fun and adventurous when drunk and that I should be trying harder: SUCCESS.

  15. It’s like a checklist, isn’t it? I think I’ve probably done everything on this list therefore I am British. Ashamed but still British.

  16. What’s all this then?

  17. I know some people who do a lot of these while sober. I guess that means they’re free to do it while drunk, too!

Is anyone else still able to see the video? I tried three different browsers, and they all just get a blank white space instead of a video. Maybe it’s been taken down?

  19. I’ll see your bet and raise you drunk history.

    educational!

  20. I don’t see how this is any more effective than going down my town centre and filming everyone you see on a Saturday night.
