Have you ever noticed that people get the word “hoax” confused with the words “because I’m stupid.” That is constantly happening. Anytime that anyone doesn’t really think things through or understand what is happening, it’s a hoax. I’m lazy, so I’m not going to back up what I’m talking about with actual examples not going to waste your time with boring examples you already know, but needless to say, it is happening again with that Conan’s new backdrop looks like Nintendo thing from yesterday. From the Hollywood Reporter blogs:

Many assumed it was a direct screen shot from “Mushroom Kingdom” and that somebody on the “Tonight Show” production team literally stole their set design from the game. There were rumors that O’Brien might even mention it on tonight’s show (sources say he didn’t).

The vid game look-alike was actually the work of blogger Tim Bierbaum at SeriousLunch.com, who created the effect in Photoshop after noticing that O’Brien’s backdrop looked familiar.

Wait, WHAT? Who assumed it was a direct screenshot from “Mushroom Kingdom”? This guy? This lady? Here’s another one, from a blog run by the SyFy Network:

All is not as it seems. It’s a hoax, and I call “‘shopped!” Being a Super Mario player myself, I didn’t recognize that Mario scene from any levels of the game. After a quick call to our company-mates at the Tonight Show at NBC in Burbank (DVICE is also part of NBC Universal), the similarities between Conan’s set and this Mario composite mash-up were quickly denied as a fabrication.

Relax, Woodward and Bernstein. Seriously, what is everyone talking about? It’s only a hoax if you’re mentally retarded (DSM IV style) and don’t know what the word “hoax” means. Yikes. SOMEONE HAS PUT BRAWNDO IN THE WATER SUPPLY!

  1. Soon we’ll be hearing about this on a local news report from Podunk, Ohio on a slow news day.

  2. Dang. And they were just moments away from convincing the world that Conan was a fat Itallian plumber.

Inside sources tell me there’s a warp level hidden behind the backdrop, though…

  4. how could that possibly be a level from an actual mario game?!? seriously, folks. there’s water hovering above sky. and as we all know, mario follows all rules of logic and physics to a T.

  5. Amen for saying exactly what anyone with a brain was thinking when they read that.

..and hitting Up, Up, Down, Down, Left-Right, Left-Right, B, A, select+start on your remote will get you 30 extra seconds of monologue.

  7. Generally, in a hoax-like situation, people are mislead because there is no other way to corroborate the information. In this situation, there is absolutely no way to determine whether or not this JPG from Podunk, Internet is a true representation… OOPS TURNED ON THE TV.

  8. But Brawndo’s got the electrolytes we crave?!

“DSM IV style”. gabe is the master!

  10. Duuuuuude. Gimme an NSFW warning before I click on ‘chick lights firecracker in butt’ link.

THANKS, GABE. Now I can’t even watch it.

  11. I got smacked with the “holy shit I’m watching the firecracker-in-butt video at work” realization as well. And now I can’t watch it either. Damn you, Gabe!

Also, I believe “hoax” is the wrong word. Did anyone actually try to convince the public that it was a direct screenshot? Because from what I can tell, the original concept (that several features of Conan’s backdrop look like animations from the Mario Brothers video games) is still true. And you can’t stop The Truth, sir.

  12. What Super Mario World are these people remembering? I think people just get giddy when they hear “Super Mario” and “SNES” in the same sentence.

Jeez, just because something was made in photoshop doesn’t mean it was meant to be taken as real. VIDEOGUM ARE LIARS, SPOCK NEVER WORE A DRESS WHILE SMOKING (as seen in the right sidebar on this page). I CALL SHOPPED! FAKE!
