Tonight is Jay Leno’s final show as host of The Tonight Show. Sure, he’s going to be right back at it this fall with his new nightly 10PM comedy show, because some people don’t know when to quit. But this is nevertheless an important turning point in his career. He’s been the host of America’s premiere late night talk show for almost 17 years. And yet, despite his role as King of the Ratings and his well-worn place in millions of American homes, as Gawker pointed out earlier this morning, there is less fanfare surrounding his departure than you might expect. Conan, another popular late night presence who said “goodbye” earlier this year despite the fact that he was simply moving his entire operation to Los Angeles to take over for Jay, was treated like Princess Diana. Basically. Perhaps people just have late night changing of the guard fatigue.
Nevertheless, one thing that you should be able to count on is a ridiculous YouTube fan montage of Jay Leno photos set to wistful, perhaps cheeseball music. Everyone’s got one of these. Dakota Fanning’s got one. Dax Shepard’s got one. Poor Jay Leno! Doesn’t have one!
Admittedly, I’m way too lazy to actually pull together a collection of Jay Leno photographs. So I just used a Frankie Muniz fan montage. About him dying? Perfect.
Goodbye Jay Leno.
