There’s an unusual (and unusually entertaining) ad for this summer’s comedy-that-can’t-get-here-soon-enough, Funny People, on the NBC website. It’s positioned as a clip from a hit NBC show called Yo, Teach!, but it’s one of those shows-within-a-movie type things, like those trailers from Tropic Thunder. It’s not as funny as those trailers from Tropic Thunder (nothing will ever beat Satan’s Alley), but it gets the sitcom cliches down, starring Jason Schwartzman and Bo Burnham as an unconventional teacher and his rapping student.

This actually seems more like a Saturday morning sitcom like Saved By The Bell, or something that would be on Nickelodeon. I never thought it would be possible to say this, but it’s actually not edgy (or “edgy”) enough for prime time network TV, which is really dirty now (See: Two And A Half Men). Still mostly terrible, but also really dirty. How far we’ve come. (Via NY Mag‘s Vulture.)

  1. This is awful in the best way possible.

  2. Also starring Raj from What’s Happening as Schwartzman’s faculty foil. That was a nice touch.

  3. I guess I should give up on my sitcom about an edgy high school music teacher, Oh Snap!

This makes me so nostalgic. I really want this show to be a part of my childhood.

  5. As a former public school teacher, I can say that I would have 100% watched this show, and rolled my eyes the whole time.

Also, some teachers really do the whole “Shakespeare was a great rapper” lesson, no joke. :(

  6. Welcome Back, Schwartzman!

I feel like there’s a Steve Harvey Show or City Guys reference in here somewhere, but I don’t want to push it.

Ok, does anyone else see that the classroom set looks exactly like the classroom set from “All That?” Not a bad thing just kinda cool.

    • A little “Boy Meets World” (the early years) as well. Maybe there’s some basic classroom set that can be rented for cheap. If so, I kind of want in on that…just to walk around in once in a while.

  11. Yeah, I definitely have a thing for Jason Schwartzman. Why do I have a thing for Jason Schwartzman?
