Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro trailer, you guys.

OK, first let me say that this actually looks pretty good. Sure, it’s a little film-grad-with-a-minor-in-mid-century-French-philosophy’s-senior-thesis, but it’s Francis Ford Coppola, he is often very good at making movies. And sure, it is a little funny that this looks more like a Sophia Coppola film, as if her recent success has forced her father to reconsider his life’s work and grab onto that moody, twee zeitgeist. But whatever! And I like Vincent Gallo. There I said it.

But the real danger with this film is now that we live in the post-ironic age, whatever THAT means, when you get the tone of something so right, it starts to look like you’re making a joke. Which is why Tetro basically looks like the sequel to Louis C.K.’s Persona Ne’ll Aqua:

Do you see what I mean? You see what I mean.

  1. I skipped to the end to see if there’s color, and it’s all black and white. BORING.

Like 8 1/2, but easier to understand. And I love Louis C.K.

  3. Yeah, I think the black and white is also a big part of why it looks like a joke. But also, sort of good. A good joke? I don’t know what to do with this.

  4. I’m not convinced, especially since his last film was SO SHITTY: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/youth_without_youth/

And I hate Vincent Gallo and his ugly cokehead face.

  5. Tetro doesn’t look like Sofia much at all, or twee. Just because it’s noir doesn’t mean it’s precious, and I don’t get the “It’s Life, Jump Into Life” feel at all. What?

    I don’t like Vincent Gallo.

      • I’m just saying, this is the same moniker you assigned to “(500) Days of Summer” and “Vicky Christina Barcelona.” Nothing you said about the trailer matches up with what those things actually mean, you’re just applying a litany of general film motifs to what looks like at least a quasi-original movie.

        • I already said that it looked good, so you’re fighting the bad fight here. But if you really think that a black and white movie about an ex-pat playwright (played by Vincent Gallo) hiding out in Brazil while he drinks at outdoor cafes all afternoon and pens an epic drama about his famous, overbearing father at night, directed by a man who bottles his own wine and runs a literary magazine isn’t precious, then you and I have very different definitions of the word.

          You my darling, are insufferable

  6. French rumble fish. I’m cool with that. In fact, I’m excited.

  7. I know it’s been said here but it’s worth repeating. I hate Vincent Gallo. So much. Have you seen his website? He’s the worst.

    GALLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Love!

And Leonardo DiCaprio Jr. looks great in this!

  9. ahhh Gabe. Can’t agree with you on this. I don’t see the connection. This movie looks great in an Il Conformist way.

“Sure, it’s a little film-grad-with-a-minor-in-mid-century-French-philosophy’s-senior-thesis” can you tell all of that just from the trailer?

  10. Ugh. Not another I am such a genius that it is ripping me apart and will destroy /destroyed everything I love or worked for. Also wasn’t Mr. Coppola partly responsible for Jeepers Creepers 2?

No, seriously, what does “post-ironic” mean?
Am I being post-ironic right now without knowing, or is it something intentional?

  12. Modern films that are filmed in Black and White are the worst on principle. It just adds a certain level of cheesiness that instantly diminishes the quality of the movie regardless of the movie’s actual substance. UGH to the UGH power.

    • Clerks? Eraserhead/Pi? The Man Who Wasn’t There?

      • Also, The Elephant Man and Rumble Fish (which, as pointed out by another poster, is also a great Coppola film)

      • Eraserhead doesn’t fit into the category, because its meant to look like a 1930′s/40′s film. Tetro just looks like it was shot in color and the editor just clicked the greyscale effect in Final Cut.

And I didn’t like The Man Who Wasn’t There or Clerks.

I just feel like its unnecessary. In the cases of movies such as Eraserhead and Schindler’s List, the black and white adds something to the aesthetic of the film. But for others, I feel it detracts from the film’s quality.

  13. Let me guess, the whole thing is 2D? Shooting a feature using Dark Ages technology out of some fetishistic concept of artistic integrity is just too pretentious for my tastes.
