What can you even say about this? A black man who effortlessly climbs giant tree-like structures? Whose home is filled with balloons because everyone (everyone white) runs in terror from him? Whose body is then morphed into “black” toothpaste, and if we’re going to analyze let’s analyze: black toothpaste the grinding up and exploitation of which causes things to be whiter? I mean, it’s probably a little more complicated than that, but in the end forget about it, Jake, it’s Racist Toothpaste Commercial Town.

  1. They’ve been watching The Lonely Island. They introduced “White Power” toothpaste a long time ago.

  2. I think the lady was Asian.

  3. Not to mention the guy straddling a HUGE phallus.

  4. Black people be brushing their teeth like dis…

  5. lol wow….I’m speechless.

  6. “…black toothpaste the grinding up and exploitation of which causes things to be whiter?” Kudos on the reference to Ralph Ellison’s ‘Invisible Man.’ Hopefully that was intentional.

  7. Yup, Gabe’s a bit quick on the racism trigger sometimes, but here be racism.

  8. Errol Morris directed this, right?

I don’t find this racist, isn’t the ad just saying don’t judge a toothpaste by it’s color? I mean, if this ad ran in America I don’t think Al Sharpton would hold a press conference to denounce it or anything.

  10. appearances CAN be deceiving. yes, appearing to be black is terrifying, but sometimes ‘they’ aren’t that bad. dear asia, i think we need to have a talk.

  11. I thought you guys covered this months ago………..must of been some other site…hmmm.

I think the argument could be made that this wasn’t racist at all. It seemed like more of a well intentioned but misguided, Michel Gondry directed psa against racism.

Gabe is racist becase he thinks the guy climbing the pole looks like a monkey because he’s black.

  13. What is this trying to say? “Buy our toothpaste, it is disliked by Asian mothers and is made of depressed black men?”

  14. sometimes it sucks being the token black commenter on videogum…

days like this, man. days like this.
    :(

but most of the time :)

  15. the whole asian toothpaste industry is racist.

  16. Gabe, I will never get tired of the China town-isms.

  17. This could use a blackface Louie Armstrong.

  18. No this isn’t fucking racist, it’s TRUE. White people are scared of black people even though they’re just like us. Holy shit, no one has ever made that commentary before. Just because something depicts a stereotype doesn’t mean it is stereotyping, it is merely pointing out that the stereotype exists, rather than ignoring it.

what is racist about this commercial?
i am a black man and i dont think it is racist, its just a “off-the-wall” ad that is focused around toothpaste.
i mean how many people go to sleep on a giant toothbrush?
lets not be too quick to condemn things as racist without just cause.
if the company behind the advert and brand product is “rasist” would they even use a black man to promote their product?
the very definition of “racist or ism” plays a major part in how those whose mentality is such, treats people of another race who they consider as inferior.
remember too that there are black people who work as actors and comedians who from time to time allow themselves to be potrayed in such a way that is unbecoming
but yet go ahead and do it…and why?
    because it pays the bills.
and i feel sure that that black man in the advert did it for the same reason…to pay the bills.
we are living in a age that is not as overtly rasist as it once was, so try to remember that when you feel the need to complain.
