As you might have heard, Jimmy Fallon and his guests, the DiggNation guys and Russell Brand, did a thing last night where they chose a guy in the audience and made him a Twitter star. Young Bryan Brinkman had just seven Twitter followers last night, but as of this writing he has 22,002. It’s a pretty inspired publicity stunt for the show, and what must have been a very fun day for Bryan, but what’s next for our naive young hero, upon whom fame has been thrust as suddenly as it was for, say, Sully? Here’s the video of Bryan’s Courteney Cox “Dancing In The Dark” moment, as well as some advice about how to handle fame.

Look, they all have their laptops out on stage just like a liveblogging party (What’s that? I don’t know what that is.):

Awww. Neat. We have a Twitter too, so we know the Twropes (though I’m just guessing on the fame advice.) So here are some tips for Bryan as he navigates the rocky shoals of Twitter-iety:

1. Don’t use your Twitter money to buy meth.
2. After bedding a groupie, flush the condom or you’ll end up paying child support. (Your fellow Twitter celeb Diddy can probably give you some advice on that.)
3. Most importantly: do not Tweet about how tired you are or what you just ate. Nobody gives a shit.

Good luck!

I’m sad to see Fallon’s show is getting worse every night. Like I want to watch a 20-minute long publicity stunt for Twitter.

    • I disagree…If you had been following Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose on Twitter, you would know they’ve incorporated Twitter into their everyday life. I see nothing wrong with them trying to create more awareness for Twitter and it is an especially fitting segment given their field. How often do people like that end up on a show like Late Night? Usually its some chick who may or may not be a lesbian at the moment because of her current movie role.

  2. You’re a web video site and don’t know what Diggnation is? I’m currently wagging my finger at you.

the number three thing on the list totally goes against what twitter is about. if someone wants to tweet about what they just ate, then let them. every tweet doesn’t have to be the most mind blowing thing out there. Its point is to have people answer the question ‘what are you doin?’ if they are eating a salami on rye with ketchup and lettuce, then by all means, let them tell us that.

I disagree. I think it has improved significantly since the first show. I really want to see it succeed. I think the Twitter thing was pure genius.

      Really?
“Spin the Wheel of Carpet Samples” (actually funny for 30 seconds, make that 3, then dragging you deep into hell)
      that’s better than something?

To be fair, Jimmy seems to be less servile and grovelling for laffs than he was on weekend update.

Gentlemen, one funny idea doesn’t make a skit.

  5. I think this is a great story and obvious proof that Twitter is a powerful force. Will be interesting to see which talkshow Facebook does this with … trust me it’s inevitable.

  6. Jimmy Fallon is a breath of fresh air to late night television. Fallon FTW!

  7. I liked the segment and Jimmy is certainly starting better then Conan did. I have high hopes.

  9. Hey, Bryan is actually a friend of mine (we went to school together) so out of everyone, I am SO happy they randomly picked him since he actually has interesting freaking things to say (and fun cartoons to watch – he went to school for animation)! So, support an adorable artist and follow freakin’ http://www.twitter.com/bryanbrinkman

OMG he twittered about videogum. THE bryanbrinkman twittered about YOU. Youre gonna get so many new followers.

  11. Is Twitter over yet?

  12. Now he’s tweeting about Deerhunter. What is this, 2008?

  13. I’m paraphrasing myself here, but those Diggnation guys are fucking dorks.

OMG, what is going on in these comments? Why are they all so supportive and snark-free?

  15. I remember when Kevin Rose was on TechTV/G4… and now he’s a millionaire.

As a 56 year old grandmother, and definitely no one’s target audience….I really llike Jimmy Fallon’s new show. It makes me giggle. And now I know about diggnation, about Videogum….and I am loving this!

this is bad. 3 guys who are actively on their computers as they are on tv (4 if you count Brand who is clearly not too amped on Twitter). this is just bad television, fallon has no idea what people want to watch, if you guys think it is cool for people

they mock the kid for only having 7 followers, plus they wanna get him a lot of followers for doing absolutely nothing, his twitter could be the shittiest thing ever, but it wont matter cause all these people will be following becasue jimmy fallon said so? does this not seem retarded to anyone else? brand isnt the only confused by what the hell is going on

    • haha, I like the part when you imply a twitter (twitter account? the twitter? los twitter?) could be something other than the shittiest thing ever.

  18. Ya, I totally agree that it was a publicity stunt for Twitter…but a clever one at that. And I think its cool that they were able to give a “no-namer” such notoriety. :)

  19. Damn, a lot of deep negative scores on this post. Deep Negs, I call them. Let’s go for broke. Paul Rudd isn’t as awesome as you think he is.

    • Agreed. People that go around scoring negatives (especially for no apparent reason, like “Jimmy Fallon is a breath of fresh air to late night television.”) were probably home schooled. Bring it.

I like Fallon and would like to see his show do well.

However, the carpet bit was a waste of time.
The Lick it for Ten…not sure about that one.
    Frankly, the skits aren’t good.
I’d rather just see Jimmy do a longer monologue or give that time to his guests.

The Twitter guys and that bit was great.
I like the idea that Fallon is trying to incorporate technical entertainment and he should do more of the computer/big screen kinda stuff…like that a lot.

I do, hoever, wish that when he is doing his monologue he would stop rockin’ side to side…I’m in bed, I’ve had my last glass of wine for the nite and it makes me dizzy.

Other than my opinions stated above I wish him luck…hell, anything’s better than Conan and I like stayiing up till 1:30 in the morning.

  21. I’ve been avoiding Twitter just because I wasn’t sure if it would be worth doing, but now I know I will never sign up for it. Ever. Because it came off much more stupid than I thought it was before reading this post. Why would I want to know what anybody has to say in a Twitter post? And if you’re posting about what you just ate, then I really have no reason to read your post. I’m not so bothered by the publicity stunt because that’s what people do to sell their products, but at least for me it backfired. I can’t cheer for some guy who is now Twitter-famous because of a show I don’t watch, and now the 1% chance of me signing up for Twitter has completely gone away. Good job, Twitter-twits.

They should have called it Twatter…
