In 1993, the world fell in love with Wiley Wiggins as the eighth grade ingenue Mitch Kramer in Dazed And Confused. And then in 2001, he was in Waking Life. And then…nothing that I’ve heard of! Every time I watch Dazed, which is often, I think “Where the fuck is Wiley Wiggins?” Well, here the fuck he is, starring in a mumblecore* movie that’s premiering next month at SXSW called Sorry, Thanks:

Wiley also has a website, where I just learned that he did the audiobook for Chuck Klosterman’s novel, Downtown Owl. Welcome back, Wiley!

* I’m just trying to bait the commenters who freak out every time I call anything “mumblecore.”

I was always freaked out about how much he touched his nose, shrugged and let out exasperated sighs in D&C. It’s so “f***ing distracting”.

    • SAME HERE– and played at drinking game along with it at one point

Richard Linklater took the blame for that in the Criterion Edition commentary. He said he liked it when he saw Wiley do it once and kept encouraging him to do it – only when he went to edit he realized how he had encouraged Wiley to overdo it. Way to wreck a career, Link.

  2. Is this the sequel to Medicine For Melancholy?

Wiley plays keyboard in a really neat Austin band called the Diagonals (or just Diagonals? I’m never sure). He acts in a lot of indie movies his friends make here. Also he has a fabulous wet bar. There, I just filled you in. You’re welcome.

  4. That was weird like going to a high school reunion and seeing people for the first time in a decade. He’s the same (noise touching guy) but now a grown up. How did this happen? I feel old (but not as old as Gabe).

Seeing as these are non-professional actors and, you know, the guy who founded the GENRE OF MUMBLECORE in the movie (andrew bujalski), I think it’s fair to say this is Mumblecore.

  7. Is it possible to make a mumblecore movie not about hipsters? jw.

  8. It was weird how he did the nose-touching and hair-wiping in Waking Life, too! Totally pegged him through the cartoons.
    This looks alright.

  9. wiley, come to the gym with me. i need a spotter, and there are nice treadmills.

    • yeah, he’s looking a little thick under the chin.

  11. I’m asking this as a serious question: does anyone actually LIKE mumblecore? And saying you do, WHY? Just…WHY?

Aw, I went to college with Ia Hernandez! I sat watching this whole trailer thinking, “She’s a dead ringer for Ia.” And then she turns out to be. Of course, no one finds this mind blowing but me.

  13. 1:33 Sorry Gabe.

I worked with him for a while at Apple computer, and he is definitely more involved in computer stuff than with acting. He would get extremely embarrassed whenever anyone would mention any of the movies he had done. I’m surprised he is getting back in the game.

I caught this at SXSW and liked it a lot. It’s not “mumblecore.” At least, it’s nothing like “Mutual Appreciation,” if that’s the standard. No hipsters. The role Wiley Wiggins plays could not be less hip, actually. It’s also such a different thing from “Medicine for Melancholy”. This is just a straight-up comedy. That’s so crazy that he works at Apple computer!! I can totally see that. Which one is Ia Hernandez? If she’s the clueless girlfriend, she blew me away.
