Obviously, lots of noise is made every year about the Super Bowl ads. This year a 30-second spot cost $3 million dollars. Perfect. The children of Darfur say, “false economy, schmalse economy!” They also say, “food and medicine, please.” But with the exception of the movie trailers shown last night, which were almost uniformly well done and exciting even if the movies themselves are probably going to be butt (why does Cobra hate France so much? And who fucking put Dennis Quaid in charge of G.I. Joe?), the ads all had one thing in common: they were almost all reflective of the fact that shit is getting real.

There were ads from both CareerBuilder and Monster.com over who could best help you escape unemployment and put food on your family. And there was an ad for Cash4Gold.com, which you might remember is the company that suggests ripping your grandmother’s teeth out while she is asleep. Got to get paid! Even Budweiser addressed the national need for belt tightening:

Classic business meeting. Always drinking beer in the middle of the day because of how business is done.

Now, admittedly, CareerBuilder’s ad was probably the best of the night. It was TBS Very Funny. But still. :( .

And then there was this competing ad for Monster.com:

Man, who hasn’t had a job working in the storage closet of a mob boss’s office underneath a moose? Pay your dues! What?

The e-Trade baby was back, and he is like the Puppy Bowl of on-line financial services advertising mascots.

But I think making fun of an old man for losing his 401k is not very cool, e-Trade baby. He doesn’t have time to ride this market out, you tiny diaper jerk.

And here’s that Cash4Gold commercial, because of how the Super Bowl didn’t look like a local cable access broadcast enough.

The most important thing to remember, of course, is that all of these ads cost 3 million dollars in air-time alone, not to mention production costs. But it’s not an offensive waste of money on the part of short-sighted corporations looking to fill out their Q1 balance sheets in the face of genuine economic hardship that’s actually destroying lives. It’s an investment! Well done, everyone. What’s that? Your champagne is getting a little warmer than you like? Just throw it out and pour yourself a fresh glass. What is this, communist Russia?

cash4gold commercial is a couple days old…it’s okay, i’m always late for the dance, too.

    • Well, it still ran during the Super Bowl and this was a post about ads that ran during the Super Bowl, so I don’t really see your point.

It’s okay, I’m always late to the understanding what people are talking about in the first place, too.

I liked the affirmative action e-trade baby commericial- with the soulfull tunes of
    Mr. Mister…”take these broken wings….”

Wall street must learn to fly again, learn to live soooo free!

  3. I agree, the careerbuilder commercial was probably the best i saw all night, but overall, i was pretty disappointed. Fun fact: the careerbuilder commercial was a minute long, costing $6 million to air (plus the cost of the trained seal).

  4. The flower delivery add with “no one wants to see you naked” was the best by far.

Oh yeah- I forgot about that one- it was good and so was the “Crystal Ball” (snowglobe) one.

I agree that the Careerbuilder one was hilarious, I mean a koala got punched in the face…multiple times, it’s hard to beat that. Though the Cash4Gold one was hilarious as well, I like the fact that they are playing on their company image in it as well. I was watching something on the super bowl ads that was pretty good, here’s the link: http://www.newsy.com/
It’s the first video on the front page.

  8. what about the one with conan and jon benjamin? my tv reception is pretty fuzzy but im pretty sure that was jon benjamin wasnt it??

  9. Wow, I don’t even see why people say to watch the Super Bowl “for the commercials” when all of those commercials were just as bad as the commercials I usually try to avoid.

  10. Nothing makes me long for the 90s like Ed McMahon and MC Hammer. But that doesn’t make me want to give my gold away.

  11. Yeah, but Bob Dylan AND Conan O’Brien winding up in commercials? Christ…who’s left to respect?

  12. Since the price of gold increases as the economy worsens, I wouldn’t go selling your gold toilets just yet, America.
