Denis Leary is brassy and obnoxious, but mostly he just isn’t funny. He wasn’t funny when he did stand up, and he’s taken that same brand of not being funny into his acting career. Also: joke thief. But this is funny. Denis Leary ripping apart his own career is funny. He’s finally found a subject to rant about that he actually understands.

Its been years since i watched it as a wee tot but i enjoyed it.

I was skeptical for many years about rescue me, but this past year I put it on my netflix and I actually enjoy it. I think denis leary is a good foundation for that type of show. I mean it’s not THE BEST and I think everyone has been caught in a fire now WHEN NOT ON DUTY.
BUT I have to believe that Leary is the reason the soundtrack for the show is mostly all things Dulli. Gotta like him for that, right? In one ep they played all of “The Lure Would Prove Too Much” voicemail part too!

I sort of see Dennis Leary as a proto-Dane Cook. He replaces being funny with getting angry about things, he’s had a weird and unsuccessful acting career, and only high school boys can defend his nonexisted brand of humor.
My favorite is Hicks when questioned by a reporter about “similarities” in their acts:
“I have a scoop for you. I stole his act. I camouflaged it with punchlines, and to really throw people off, I did it before he did.” – Bill Hicks
Also, Leary thinks autistic kids are just dumb and lazy. Class act all around.
The Ref is one of my favorite Christmas movies, but it almost entirely due to Kevin Spacey and the dude who played Leary’s drunk partner. It makes me nauseous to think of how terrible it would have been if Tom Arnold and Roseanne Barr had been cast. Yeeeeeuck.

The new rule is that no one is allowed to talk about being Irish, ever. Everyone is Irish, Denis. No one is interested that you are Irish and went to Ireland and got drunk on Irish drinks in an Irish bar and probably everyone in Ireland is related to you because you are so extra Irish. Stop it.
The Ref is the greatest Christmas movie ever. I watch it practically every year. Judy Davis and Kevin Bacon steal it though. Tom and Roseanne, that would have been shit.
The Ref is most memorable for making the mom from Mary Poppins into the the shittiest grandmother on the planet, and making fun of Gene Siskel.
I have seen The Matchmaker and it’s pretty cute.
I was literally rewatching Bill Hicks’s routine about non -smokers on ene side of my screen when I saw this post in my feed reader on the other side of the screen. Oh the irony. I think I’ll continue watching Hicks and skip this.
An odd observation that makes me mildly suicidal: I was smoking as I watched the clip. Denis (Suddenly,I think of the word ‘Penis’ as rhyming with ‘Dennis’ – christ, I hope that wears off when I sober up) Leary and I smoke EXACTLY the same! I guess I can’t use the ‘yeah, but it looks REALLY cool’ argument anymore.

i always watch “there is no cure for cancer” when it’s on comedy central… i love it but in my defense my dad like IS denis leary (toned down and not a total jackass and an actual human and not a caricature, but duh) and it reminds me of his dinner table rants growing up.
also: the ref is impeccable.
