Thanks to this week’s Ultimate Tipping Champion, Denise, for this incredible music video of a High School Science teacher (my guess) singing his original soft metal masterpiece, “Without You,” about loneliness, featuring beaches, bogs, clouds, and some sort of local model who probably doesn’t know this is on the internet. This is a drop everything and watch now kind of situation. You will be hearing about this guy:

I would like that to be my ringtone. Turns out Pensacola’s (I knew it!) Mark Gormley has been making these since 2006 with almost no views. Like this one with animation, about birds:

Or this one, about…9/11?:

Mark Gormley for Most Famous YouTube Star of January, 2009, please.

  1. Wow. It’s like a Tim & Eric character came to life and moved to Pensacola!

    • That is exactly what I thought. I wonder if they ever saw this guy.
I think my favorite parts are when he changes legs to put weight on.

  2. Oh. My. God.
    An Intense Song.
thats all I can really say right now.

soon to be a collaborator with Robert Plant

  4. Robert Plants next collaborator?

  5. Ha, the gratuitous bikini shot in the first video is great.

  6. I think…this is awesome?

  7. Also, Phil Thomas Katt is a little too FLAMBOYANT, if you ask me.

  8. It’s too creepy to watch. I can’t believe that girl was a willing participant. Maybe Mr. Gormley is her dad. That’s even creepier

  9. I like at 1:54 when he gets distracted by something offscreen and looks as if to say “oh, really?”

  10. I like Mark Gormley! He looks like he’s recording these videos in a Music Video Booth thing at Great Adventure!

  11. I think anything without a sense of irony in this day and age is so rare that when something like this pops up that is so ridiculous and yet does not appear to have a trace of irony to it, we don’t really even know what to do with it.

I’ve seen too many things like this done ironically that now I’m completely beside myself. I’m flummoxed, bewildered, and slightly frightened.

  12. The video for without you makes the most sense ever made by anything.

  13. He went to SPACE! Come back to us, Mark Gormley!

  14. agreed. and guy was right– this IS an intense song.

“dont play arouuuund with my affection, wo-man”

  15. Brilliant – but even better than just this – I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the girl at the end telling me to visit http://www.theunchartedzone.com/ and I’m so glad I did. It looks like there’s some other favorite artists that Katt likes to play, who also make great use of the local model wandering around town while being the artists’ muse.

The only thing the long haired dude can comment for the last song is that “He should do a twelve minute version of this, the music is really cool”

    seriously?

  17. Did you watch the video of the “lucky” seven finalists from the Friday the 13th contest?

  18. I think the song little wings might be the bastard child of an acid trip

the first two are unavailable now :-(
    but here’s another– http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3BgdU3HxGI

One of the other videos says that he recorded his music in the 1970s but is only now making videos for them. Since it’s Katz production, I can assume Mark had some extra cash hanging around to spend getting videos made by the creepy looking dude at the beginning of the video. Good for him and his Rush/Moody Blues/Jethro Tull-ish music.

  22. these songs were soooo made in Microsoft Songsmith. (and the videos in… Videosmith?)

  23. I love that the chic in the first video is wearing a fetching outfit from the Heidiwood clothing line. At least we know she sold one zebra striped halter!

  24. Ashley  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009 +11

    His voice is absolutely haunting.

  25. that isn’t a music video. it’s evidence in a stalking case.

little wings is amazing. it makes me feel like i’m 13 tripping in the backseat of my mom’s cutlass supreme. WHOA! WHISTLE SOLO!

  27. At 3:41, they even remade the monolith site from ’2001: A Space Odyssey’.

I think this ‘CGI from the Stone Age’ version befits the film’s theme perfectly.

    Also, great mustache.

  28. OMIGOD! My dad is WAY cooler!!!

  29. Am i the only one who thinks that this guy has an above average voice for a 50 year old creepy looking dude?
    Additionally though, WHAT.

Guys, but seriously, have you actually LISTENED to “Little Wings”? It’s, like actually, pretty sweet. I’m getting white rabbit chills and am scrounging my drug shoebox for acid. I think I only get distracted if I look at him floating though space; not the seagulls.

    • TD  |   Posted on Jan 14th, 2009 +5

Yeah, I’m going to go out on a limb (npi) and say ‘Little Wings’ is actually good in an acoustic Nuggets II kind of way.
I love how he awkwardly changes positions at the microphone.

I was expecting songs that were tortuous but instead they’re strangely endearing. He’s like a songwriting Napoleon Dynamite. More Mark Gormley!

  32. From here on out, all of my days will be used to praise Mark Gormley.

  33. There are few things better than the nerdy genius prolifically churning out songs in obscurity, led by the muse of a familiar heavy metal band but sending it through a fun house crazy prism. This was the appeal of Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices (trying and trying to make another “Don’t Fear the Reaper”) and it’s the appeal of Mark Gormley, whose goal in “Without You” is late-70s-era Iron Maiden. Rock on! And props to a guy who really knows how to rock the kickstand pose!

  34. At the very least it can be said that Gormley’s “Without You” is better than Van Halen’s “Without You,” since one doesn’t have the urge to punch him out like they do Gary Cherone.

  35. Also, Gormley is what Jeffrey Dahmer would like today if he hadn’t been killed in prison.

  36. These are actually power point presentations for his science class.

  37. This is probably the best post I’ve ever seen EVER.

  38. I’m late to the party but Gormley is a good songwriter, and his voice is pretty cool

  39. rach  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009 -1

    isnt that colin meloy?

  40. Liam  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009 +2

Mark Gormley needs to start a power duo with Chris Dane Owens (a.k.a. the “Shine On You” guy). it’d be like a cross between Nelson (the band) and Gandalf (the wizard)!!!

  41. mfun  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009 +4

mark gormley, frontrunner for playing eric clapton in his eventual biopic

  42. Yes! I think I would feel just as strongly about this if all it was was him shifting his weight. Who needs random girl inexplicably in a bikini in a bar?

  43. eklund  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009 +1

    where’s caseys brother?

  44. Robert Pollard – also a former teacher, as I assume Gormley is. Is that fact or are we just assuming he’s a teacher? But I think that’s where the similarities end. Gormley is awesome in an amusing, almost sad way. Pollard is simply awesome. Maybe if Gormley drank more…

  45. Total child pred. glasses. The guy in the last video is correct, the music is really cool.

  46. i’ll give you a lot to spit out bitch.

  47. poormodel  |   Posted on Jan 20th, 2009 0

did that chick know she was going to be in some old guys music video? after watching it i get the impression she didn’t.

girl: “so this is going to a modeling agency, right?

cameraman (old guy): “oh yeah they’ll see this…if they’re watch public access in Pensacola…”

  48. my new favorite singer/songwriter. what do you think his influences are? (besides the obvious gacy and dahmer) I’m saying jethro tull and mister mister

  49. I’m proud to say that as a native of Pensacola, we spent many post-midnight weekends watching the Uncharted Zone back in my pre-college, pre-Youtube days. It’s a treasure trove.

  50. Has anyone mentioned that video presenter Phil Thomas Katt IS, IN FACT, Buddy Garrity with sunglasses and a little Just For Men?

  51. FaceofEvil6  |   Posted on Jan 28th, 2009 0

If Billy Bob Thornton wasn’t famous, he’d be Tommy Robinetti.

  52. Insect Ceiling  |   Posted on Jan 28th, 2009 0

Phil Thomas Katt has some pretty great videos on his Myspace page.
